I'm moving out of my apartment because my roommates lied about a lot of things. Now, they are showing the room to other people and I hear them telling the same lies to prospective roommates.

Things such as: bills come to $100 per month ($200 is the truth), the landlord will replace the carpet (not true at all), the landlord will fix the broken screen (not true), area is quiet (I have complained about the neighbors many times and even had to call the police because they scream until all hours of the morning), and that the guys are quiet and laid back (they have thrown parties that kept me up all night when I had to work the next morning.)

I want to tell prospective roommates the truth, but I don't know how to do it discreetly, so that the guys won't know it was me.

Find out how the people are finding out about the apartment. If it's craigslist, etc. If it's a big city go to craigslist and find the listing a post a subsequent listing stating this. Say you're a friend of the former roommate.

Try talking to your landlord about the problems if you can, otherwise, check the applications that come in and if people seem honestly quiet and like they wouldn't work then call or email them. or try talking to your roommates and telling them they should find someone more like them to move in so they won't have people moving out which causes them to lose money. Aside from those things you can just move on!

Well if it is bothering that much , confront your roomates, in a nice polite way about it but be firm and casual. Don't make it sound to them that is it is a big deal. If you feel uncomfortable , just do it 'on the side' byt striking up a converstaion with the person / people who come to view and take them to another room in the house, not too far but not too close, and just tell them or 'mention' some of your room mates habits ... good luck!

You really can't stop them from lying. You can just move on. There are hundreds of crappy apartments with lying room mates and you can't save them all. you can only move forth.

If you are really concerned you can track down the numbers and call them but the old roommates will probably find out anyway.

Good Luck!

If it would not look too suspicious, maybe try to catch the potential renters attention before they leave and let them know.
If they still decide to rent, at least your conscience is clear. Or maybe tell them that you want to tell them about your favorite neighborhood coffee shop- and then tell them about the lying. Just a few suggestions!
You didn't have the same courtesy paid to you.

Its cool that you are concerned for the next guy, but unfortunately its not going to work! You cant warn everybody!Wash your hands of the situation, those guys will get whats coming to them eventually! The next snubbed roomate might not be as nice as you, or might even enjoy the parties and stuff!

If you know their phone numbers or who they are, call them later in private.
