There is no God of China. There are many religions, including Protestant ones. Obviously you are reffering to Buddha, but he is not the God of China. He was a revered philosopher in China.

I'm sorry but there are so many stereotypical answers here. People who don't know should make assumptions. Yes there is many Gods in China based on the old religion. The chief God was the Jade Emperor and another famous one is the monkey King. But the religion of Buddha is not faith but more of a following. Trying understand the Universe and one's place in it. There is a lot to be learned in Buddhism even for a Christian like myself. The most famous of course are various incarnations of Buddha along with the Female Buddha who was really a male.

As for the our God, the Christian God. His name is not God is Chinese. It's based on Jesus' real name Joshua, or Yew Soo, the Chinese equivalent.

You're thinking of Buddha, who is the major icon in the Buddhist religion. He's not actually a god; but he is revered. But in China there are many, many gods for many different things, and not everyone is a Buddhist. They may be Taoists, or Confucians. It's a very pantheistic and pragmatic sort of culture for religion.

Just wander around any Chinese town; you'll find temples for the gods Tin Hau, Man Mo, and many others. To complicate matters further, Chinese also practice ancestor worship, so many of the altars you find in homes are not dedicated to any god, but instead to a parent or grandparent.

Edit: Nora Explora is totally wrong. I live in China and I can assure her that there is a great deal of religious worship here. There are even many Christians.

Edit 2: The purpose of incense is that it is suppoed to be a method of purifying the surroundings, bringing forth the Buddhist Alamkaraka (Realm of Adornment). Plus, it smells nice :)

The entity you are referring to is Buddha, a holy man who lived long ago. Buddhism is not a religion, but a way of life.

Buddha was married and had a child. All of a sudden he decided to leave in search of the meaning of life. He found pain, misery, and death and so he came up with a philosophy of denial of the world so it would not hurt.

I am sure Buddha was a good man, but he was no god.

Although the government in China is communist, I don't know much about how the Chinese live spiritually, whether they worship or not and how. All I know is that Catholics are persecuted. For example, when a new bishop, etc is appointed, it must be all in secret for their safety.

Besides, there is only ONE GOD who will take all the good people, Christians or not, to heaven to live happily with him.

The top God in China is Heaven(or Ti'en), which is worshipped in Confucianism.

The icon that you just described is a Buddha.

The 3 main religions in China are: Confucianism, Taoism, & Buddhism.

I think that is a version of Maitreya Bodhisattva. He is to be the next Buddha on earth.
The literal meaning of the word "Buddha" means Awakened. A being who is completely enlightened and realizes the phenomena of our cyclic existence can be considered a Buddha.
The incense is an offering, incense is traditionally offered to Buddhas and deities and even ancestors(for Chinese) as a sort of respect. Different cultures and individuals will tell you different reasons for making offerings so I won't decide on the reason.

A faith with 5.6 million followers (as of 1996), Confucianism was founded by Confucius, a Chinese philosopher, in the sixth and fifth centuries B.C. Confucius's sayings and dialogues, known collectively as the Analects, were written down by his followers. Confucianism, which grew out of a tumultuous time in Chinese history, stresses the relationship between individuals, their families, and society, based on li (proper behavior) and jen (sympathetic attitude). Its practical, socially oriented philosophy was challenged by the more mystical precepts of Taoism and Buddhism, which were partially incorporated to create neo-Confucianism during the Sung dynasty (A.D. 960-1279). The overthrow of the Chinese monarchy and the communist revolution during the twentieth century have severely lessened the influence of Confucianism on modern Chinese culture.

Generally the Chinese worship him for wealth and happiness and there are those who even believed strongly that he is able to bequeath them with children as one of his most popular forms is that with five children surrounding him.

A rather inaccurate name given by Westerners to the Bodhisattva Maitreya as he is depicted in Chinese iconography. Maitreya means the Loving or Friendly One and consequently ancient artists thought it appropriate to depict this bodhisattva as a rotund, cheerfully smiling character. Statues of Maitreya are usually found at the entrance of Chinese temples and among more superstitious Chinese Buddhists are sometimes worshipped as a god of good luck and prosperity.
