I think it's pretty risky to allow anyone who applies for service to serve. What guidelines do the branches of service exercise along those lines. Some of our enemies are pretty crafty people. Perhaps those who are chosen to DEFEND our country should show some proof of loyalty such as taking the time to become citizens. What is the criteria here?

The military does do background checks on every potential recruit. These are standard ENTNAC checks and an enlistee cannot ship off to their branches basic training until it has come back clean. Also, should the enlistee choose a job requiring a security clearance, that must also be completed before they are allowed to actually work in that field. Those sometimes take a while to complete and training may commence in the MOS (military occupational specialty) but the new recruit cannot work in his/her field until they are granted the appropriate clearance. The term you use in your question, loyalty, corresponds to the 'moral' qualifications in recruiting terms. Each potential enlistee must be physically and morally qualified, plus meet other educational requirements.

Yes the military does a background check on everybody, but if you have something in your background you can get a waiver to join. I was in the military and got out in 2004. I was surprise how easy it was and how many people had criminal records not to mention how many foreigners were in. A lot of them were from countries we were fighting. You don't even have to be a US citizen to be in the military as long as you have the right to work here. I knew quite a few people who only joined to get citizenship and bring their family here.

Katie who answered you is obviously in the military, but is totally clueless if they don't think just anybody can't join. Right now the Army and the Marines are desperate for people and they are overlooking things and telling recruits not to mention them. It happens in peace time wake up and get real.
All you have to do if your a male is score a 20 out of 100 on the asvab and they will let you in the Marines, so pretty much any one can be a Marine!

It is horrible who our military allows in and I don't mean just foreigners. They allow people who are mentally unstable, retarded, and just plain dirt bags in just to fill slots and won't let them leave. The condition of equipment that the military uses and the quality of training is also horrible. There is no excuse for a country as great as ours to subject our troops to this.

Wow. Obviously you don't know much about the requirments to get into the Military, do you? Not everyone can get in. They do entire background checks and everything on potential recruits. Not just ANYONE can get into the military, they have some serious guidlines. Have you ever heard the quote:
If anyone could get in, it wouldn't be the Marines.

I am not just saying Marines have the toughest guidelines, but all the military branches do. Get your facts straight.

Having taken the oath, both as an enlisted and as an officer (field commission), and serving 10 yrs during the Korean era, I was privileged to have served along side several young men and women from all walks of life and from many lands. One thing we have done for our vets is to make it easier for them to gain their citizenship for having given us their loyalty and service. Citizenship is not a requirement to serve our country and never has been since it's founding, when many from distant lands joined our ranks.

Certain positions require advanced security screenings. (some Intelligence and SF jobs) People have told me stories about how their relatives, teachers, friends, employers were interviewed.

Not unless they are flaming terrorists. Other wise anyone that meets the requirements. That is why that one Muslim marine shot up all his marine buddies.
