When I get married I really want a black dress. My friends think I'm crazy and the guy I plan on marrying (at some point lol) is not okay with it. I personally don't know what the big deal is. It's just a dress, right?

I think it could be fabulous! Do your friends (not to mention your fiance) often think you are crazy, or is this a rare incident? -- if it happens all the time, maybe they'll see that its part of your personality.

I've been a wedding consultant for over 20 years and I have always thought that the wedding should express the bride's inner personality to the fullest. Your closest friends and relatives will be there and they shouldn't be too surprised, huh?

I had a book, that i can't find now, with a bride in a black dress with crimson flowers adorning a black vail -- it was STUNNING!
Red roses would be a classic look with that. White could be too stark a contrast -- like a spilled dot of white paint on a black floor.

Have fun with the look -- black table cloths at the reception, if its formal, makes whatever the presentation on top float and is very dramatic. Just be sure to use lots of color to keep the look "up". Colored flowers and maybe overlays.

I have always wanted a black wedding dress. Just to be different and because I love the idea of being unconventional. There is nothing wrong with wearing a black dress but the reason so many people are against it is for two reasons;
1. Black is typical associated with cult type stuff or magic or just evil in general. Most marriages are seen as religious events, and anything evil is looked upon as being anti the marriage ritual. Even if you aren't religious (I'm catholic so this is where my knowledge comes from) many people see it as a sign of going against the values that marriage holds

2. White is worn as a symbolic sign of virtue and "virginity". Brides back in the old old days were supposed to have been virgins up until they consumated their marriage which meant the husband and wife of course having sex for the first time. If the wife was not pure or a virgin she was looked upon badly. Much like white lilies are a very pure flower, a bride is seen as the most pure woman. That could be a reason so many people are against any colored dress besides white or ivory (Which is typically used for a second wedding).

But if you feel comfortable in a black dress, explain to your fiance why you would like to wear one, and if he isn't supportive in atleast listening, how will he be with more difficult decisions and your opinions?

I hope this helps a bit. Good luck with your wedding!

Yes, there is a lot wrong with a black wedding dress. The wedding is supposed to be a celebration, full of happiness and light, wonderful feelings. Black dresses, even for attendants, drag everything right down to the dregs. Think happy! Colours do matter!

When it comes to weddings, most people want the traditional white dress - especially if it's their first. It usually symbolizes purity, virginity and elegance. As for 2nd and + weddings, off white, ivory, cream, etc. is chosen.

I have been to a black and white wedding and it was VERY elegant. The bride wore a beautiful strapless black gown with a few stones on it. The bridesmaids wore black with white sash and carried white flowers. I guess it depends on the style of the dresses that you and your entourage will wear.

It's your wedding. Your choice. Your fiance shouldn't care what color dress you wear. He's marrying you, not the dress.

Colors are very common today. The white dress does not mean what it use to years ago so don't worry about all the traditions. If he is not ok with it then maybe you can compromise. There are so many gorgeous color dresses out there now. How about a white or ivory one with black details? I just made one for a girl that is gorgeous. It is Ivory with black on the neckline and a on back. You would have to see the pictures. This way you can have what you want as well as your fiance.

I understand you situation as my cousin wanted to do the same thing and because of pressure, she ended up wearing white. A black wedding dress might not go off as well as u might think. What you can do is get a dress with black in it. So you can have your balck and the rest of the family can have the white that they want so much.

No, it is the most important dress you will ever wear.
Most clothes are not a big deal but on your wedding day all
people will watch you walk in, take dozens of photos of that
dress & your children & grandchildren will ooh & ah over
pictures. One day your daughter may want to wear your veil or dress for their wedding. A youthful decision to wear black could be a big mistake in future. Maybe you want to have tradional dress & change into black dress for reception. My daughter had 2 wedding gowns, 1 for ceremony with train & 1 for reception without train.

No, it is not just a dress. However if its black and that's what you want,, then go for it.

But don't ever think its "just a dress", no matter what you wear, its what you become a different person in, its what you start the rest of your life in. Its important, and it should be beautiful. If black is beautiful to you, then enjoy!

No there is nothing wrong with it. I went to a Christian wedding where the bride, who was a virgin, wore a black wedding dress. It was beautiful! The colors of the wedding were red and black and it all went very nicely together for a winter wedding.

A white dress traditionally means you are pure AKA a virgin. Black would mean, well, that you've been around, I guess. :)
A wedding is whatever you would like it to be. If you want black, then have black. You could always have black accents on a your bridesmaids dresses or even just black bridesmaids dresses. I've seen that and it looks awesomely classy. But black you want, black it is!
