My girlfriend has a narcissistic personality. Narccisism is is a love or preoccupation for self. As an actual personality trait, it is not a very negative thing. It can be the source of great drive and can actually lead to an incredible love of friends and family as well.
Most people are common of Narcissistic personality disorder, which means that traits are incredibly exaggerated. For example, take the difference between a woman loving herself, but still being able to love and interact with others in comparison with a person that is so self-absorbed that she cares for nothing else in the world. Like Narcissus, who actually drowned chasing his own reflection in water.
Narcissistic personality disorder also often involves an incredibly, outwardly self-loving person as a mask for a complete lack of self-esteem.
As far as being narcissistic as a trait, that can basically be defined as self-loving. It really isn't a bad trait unless taken to the extreme.

My last boss, she was such a *****, man I hated her. She fell off a curb one time coming out of a restaurant, broke her wrist and needed surgery to fix it. She was back to work the very next day. I told everyone at the office the only injustice in the whole thing was that a bus wasn't coming down the street at the same time. Funny thing, she sacked me a couple of weeks later so I sued her big fat butt and yes I won.

DO YOU MEAN NARCISSISTIC? IF THAT'S WHAT YOU MEAN, THE BEST WAY TO DESCRIBE IT IS A PERSON THAT IS TOTALLY SELF-CENTERED AND HAS NO REGARDS FOR ANYONE ELSE BUT THEMSELVES. IF THEY DO SOMETHING FOR YOU IT'S USUALLY TO MAKE THEM LOOK GOOD AND BOOST THEIR EGO. THEY ARE EXTREMELY ARROGANT AND MOST OF THE TIME THEY HAVE ULTERIOR MOTIVES (SELF-GAIN) WHEN DOING THINGS.

It is considered to be a personality disorder. Referred to as: NPD.
It is also 'considered' to be genetic, and also treatable. In Greek and Roman Mythology. Narcissus, was forced to look into a pool of water, and fall in love with 'himself', because, he had rejected the advances of Echo, a nymth.
