I want to dye my hair a better looking shade of red than my natural color. But my mom wont let me cause my hair "is sooooo beautiful!" Its not like im dying it black or blue or BRIGHT friggen red or something! just red! I really want to dye it even though i do get comlemients on how pretty my hair is.

And also if i did convince my parents somehow, shoudl i get a dye kit, or go to a salon? I feel that im 13 and can make my own descisions. -

Hmmm, I find it sad that you have to convince your parents. I'm 31. I have kids. When they decide they want to dye their hair then that is up to them. It is their hair! I understand your mom not wanting you to because she loves your hair now. But would she listen to you if you tried to convince her what to do with her hair?

I realize that parents need to set boundaries and have a say in much of their children's lives. But when it comes to things like this I think the child should be able to call the shots.

Of course I'm 31 and have purple stripes in my hair--so I'm pretty liberal about things like this. :)

If you do it at home use Loreal Natural Match. http://www.naturalmatch.com/ I don't know your base color, but the Light Brown base color has a nice red, and they didn't have red for a base color. It's 6R, Light Reddish Chestnut. It enhances your natural color. It's a permanant color, but has no amonia, so it's gentler.

If you get it done at a salon, just ask them to enhance it. Make it brighter or whatever it is you're trying to achieve.

For your parents...I know when I wanted to color my hair at 15 they gave me a hard time. I think I finally convinced them when I told them I had already colored it with a semi-permanant. It was my natural color, so all it did was enhance it a little. Before that though, my mom would let me use rinses. I don't remember the name but it was from Clairol, it was a rinse that lasted about 2 weeks, no chemicals in it. The main reason my mom didn't want me to use the ones with chemicals was because it would damage my hair, and she didn't know if I would go crazy with color...dying it blonde or black. If your mom is worried it will damage it, the Natural Match is your best bet. And believe me...I've gotten my hair colored at a salon a bunch of times and my hair was very dry, more than it already is, and the color was never to my liking. At least if you do it yourself, you won't have to worry about spending even more if you mess up, whereas a salon you might. Colorings at salons are usually 45$ and up. A box is under 10$, so it's up to you.

I started dying my hair when I was 15. I still to this day dye it red. I wish my hair was naturally red, but I can understand how you would want it to be not so natural looking. My sisters hair is very orange red, but it's awesome. I don't know how you can talk them into it, I couldn't do anything when I was 13. But... if by some chance you do, I would do it yourself from a store bought box. It's not that hard to do. Also everytime me or anyone else I know goes to the salon, it never turns out right and it can be very costly.

Try telling your mum that you like to try dying your hair to get a better shade no doubt she loves the colour right now. Tell her if you don't try, you never know if the colour is suitable or not. Who knows she will like the after dye hair colour. After all, be it temporary or permanent, your hair will still grow. Better to go to a salon as it's your first trial and I'm sure you want a wonderful experience. Hairdressers being professionals should know better which shade suits you and you can ask for their advice on how to care of your hair after dyeing.

First off, hair is already dead. Bleach is the most horrible thing you could ever do to your hair. The last time I bleached my hair it all started to break off. Needless to say I had to shave my head. It was the most horrible experience of my life. There is absolutely no way to make bleached hair healthy again!!! There is a reason why us Cosmetologists call hair bleaching a "chemical haircut", your hair will break. Do some research on "how to lighten your hair with out bleach". I'm sure you will find something that suits your hair.

Yes you are right, at thirteen you are perfectly capable of making SOME decisions about your life. However, LISTEN TO YOUR MOM!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! When I was younger, I had beautiful thick, straight, brown hair. I used to beg my mom for a perm......do you think she let me do it?! NO, and thank goodness!! She knew it would damage my hair's natural beauty. I'M TELLING YOU....YOU WILL REGRET IT....

My friend growing up had red hair....when we were in middle school her hair was a very pretty light red....as we got older her hair began to slightly darken and transform into this beautiful auburn color. My point is....as you get older your hair color can change, and darken.....so please be patient. I also had a friend who colored her hair at 13 or 14 cause her mom didn't care.....and she was having to take care of her "roots" for years and years till she finally realized how ridiculous she looked having died hair at such a young age. Once you color your hair permanantly you have to keep it up until you decide to grow it out.

P.S. I have read some of the comments above....and just because your MOTHER TELLS YOU THAT YOU HAVE BEAUTIFUL HAIR, does not mean she is trying to be so overbearing and control your life.....she just knows that your hair is beautiful, even if you don't believe it, and she knows that you will one day see that, and she doesn't want you to look back and realize it wasn't worth it. You are lucky to have a mother who tells you how BEAUTIFUL your hair is.....she is doing it because she LOVES YOU....not because she want's to make you miserable..just realize that, you'll thank her for her love one day (not just about your hair, but about everything)

been there done that.believe me they're right ur hair is beutiful and it doesnt make sense to dye it if ur not gonna really change it that much.when i begged my parents to let me dye my hair in the end it wasnt worth it.i have dyed my hair like 3 times since they let me and my hair is not as soft as it used to be.dyin ur hair is very dryin and can damage ur hair alot if u dont constantly deep condition it.so before u dye ur hair think it over and make sure ur ready to handle it.if ur gonna dye it go to a salon dont do it at home.try provin to ur parents that u r mature that means no bragging and whining and maybe they'll let u.

I was 14 when I convinced my mother to let me color my hair. Now I'm 31 and wish I had never done it. My hair is stiff (even though I quit coloring it years ago) and is not soft and silky like it used to be. I advise you to leave it alone. Your hair will suffer if you start to color it.

Try one of those non permanent ones in a shade you like--ask a stylist for recommendations--so there's no risk, which parents really like because they're always worried about you getting it done and not liking it.
If they won't let you do that, I'm afraid you're stuck. Don't lose hope! Maybe they'll lighten up as you get older. (:
