Yes, you can use it while the motor is running. Where you mount it all depends on where you have space to mount it. Obviously you'd want it in a semi handy location too.

Its best to use it only when the vehicle is running. Otherwise you will drain the battery. I ran the wiring from my battery to the inside of the car so that I could conveniently use it inside even though when I go camping or fishing during the winter, my friends and I park our trucks in facing each other in somewhat of a circular pattern and then we will open the hoods of the trucks while they were running in order to keep warm. I would clamp an inverter to the battery so I could plug in a coffee pot since I already had the hood open.

under the hood will keep it out of your way. as for leaving it on without the truck running it would run your battery down very quickly because of the amps it takes to run the inverter. good luck

It is best to let any vehicle run, the 12v to 110v will drain a battery very fast. Oh, and depending on the application, it is not recommended mounting it in a wet or potentially wet location.

Yes. I usually plug mine into the cigarette lighter socket, since I use it to power something in the car.
If you don't run it too long at too high a power drain you don't need to leave the engine running.
Per 100W you'll be drawing about 9 to 10 amps from the battery, allowing for losses.
Most batteries in cars have about a 400 amp hour capacity (or about 4.5KWh), which is lower at high drain.
The amount of charge you have in the battery will determine the actual usage you can expect.
