I guess you see the news too. Yes, Iraq did take control of their military and yes we should leave. But we won't. It wouldn't really be a smart move because we've made so many enemies over there. America needs to at least occupy the area so that our intelligence can ensure that the Iraqi leaders don't screw up. Baby steps.

Speaking as someone who is in Iraq at the moment, I'd recommend you take everything said from the Iraqi government in place with a jaundiced eye.

The various factions in the so-called "unity government" are at each others' throats, and the Iraqi Security Forces are not quite ready to step upto the immense responsibility of defending all of their battlespace from domestic insurgents and foreign terrorists. It isn't a matter of trusting the Iraqis, as there are many well-meaning individuals in their police and military forces, as well as civil servants; it's just that stability is a prerequisite of functional government, and there are too many destabilizing elements in Iraq today to just leave them to the wolves.

A nation that has a death toll of 100 a day from Iraqi on Iraqi violence alone, with all sorts of criminals running around (remember Saddam released a quarter million convicts from prison right before the invasion?) needs help. The UN won't do it since their Special Envoy was killed, and this isn't a NATO mission, so it's left to the United States.

Think of it like the Pottery Barn rule: You break it, you pay for it. We haven't quite finished paying yet.

Has anyone learned anything from history?
No, they haven't.
After the Spanish American War, America took over the administration of the Philippines. Henry Stimson, a Yale graduate was the Governor General. His view was that the White Man was superior to the savages in the Philippines who were unable to govern themselves. This attitude has not changed one bit. It's taught at Yale.

C'mon Cool, we have to sift thru the political rhetoric to find the truth. Okay, so the Iraqi government took over the military. Who do you think is still calling the shots? There is only 1 other country capable of killing bad guys as efficiently as the United States, and they can't get involved. So it's left to us to settle the middle east. Like it or not, we are there, and I prefer to tackle the bad guys there than on the streets of San Antonio .

We can't just pull out until we are sure they can handle the situation. And a politically symbolic turnover of the military does not signify that.

Iraq hasn't technically taken control of their forces. They've taken control of one of the divisions, but the other nine are still under US control. They've also taken control of the Navy and Air Force (which you see is almost nothing.)

We won't leave Iraq for awhile. Their police are afraid to leave their stations due to the voilence. Not to mention the fact that the police are under-equipped. Get the police out and trained well, and get the violence down, then we may leave. Other than that, we are there to stay for awhile...

Every fire dept. should leave a five alarm fire when it is downgraded to a three alarm and a half a squad of Boy Scouts show up wthh water pistols. By the way how many allied troops have died since the end of the war? You can pick any day before the day before yesterday.

What are you talking about? America has never taken over their military - they trained their military to defend their country. No one announce the war was over or we would be loading up to come home. Get a better news source.

God I hate this same debate over and over and over but here it goes again...

The War on Saddam's Iraq and the War on Terror are two seperate things (At least at first)

The invasion of Iraq was due to Saddam refusing to comply with several different UN resolutions. Some of which dealt with his Non-compliance with UN weapons inspectors and WMD's. It had nothing to do with 9/11. Yes Bush did try to make a connection as a selling point for the war but it was NEVER the primary reason we went in there.

We defeated Saddam and his Government. Now there is a new "freely elected" government there and we are allies with the new Iraq. That war is over. We won.

What is going on there now is that Al-Qaida has used what was happening in Iraq as their own personal grudge on the USA and claiming to be fighting on behalf of the Iraqi's. They are NOT. Now the battle IS about the war on terror and if we leave now the new Iraqi government is not yet strong enough to stand on it's own. We are there at the behest of the Iraqi government. If they say get out let us handle it ourselves , we will. but they havent and they cant.
One thing America has always done is stick by her allies and Iraq IS now an Ally.
over 90% of the "insurgents" are NOT Iraqi but foreign fighters from other parts of the Middle East who are flocking to Al-Qaida's call for "Jihad"
All this Defeatist talk, all this Bush-bashing, all this Anti-war and talk of "our troops raping and killing and shooting innocents" is ABSOLUTE BULLSHIT and is helping the enemy. And those of you who do this.. are you proud of yourselves for helping an enemy who has sworn to kill every American. you think you are going to get sympathy from Osama. He will just laugh at your stupidity, not even thank you for your help and put a bullet in you.
You are doing the same as Jane Fonda and all those others did during Vietnam. Yes there are parallels between Vietnam and this war. but the parallels are BECUASE of YOU. You liberals are CAUSING the parallels.
hope you are proud of yourselves.

They haven't taken control of their military, where did you get that information from? Your ***? Marines and soldiers are still helping train their military over there, and helping them out. They are accomplishing a lot. Plus, we aren't done over there yet. When we are, we will come back home safely.
