Well, My german shepherd was out in the back yard with my 6 and 4 year old grandsons, and this is what happened:
My grandsons used to live here with me, so the other boys know them. The other kids are assh.... and since my grandkids moved out 2 years ago, The other boys have gotten louder ruder and meaner to my dogs, who are behind a four foot fenced in yard.
These kids shoot fireworks, and pop guns into the yard. rattle the fence with sticks and yell SHUT UP repetedly at the dogs.
So when my grandkids came home for a visit and went out back with the Border Collie, and the German Shepherd...Well the ***.... Kids started yelling taunts at my grandkids who had moved away, and now were back.
My German SHepherd, circled my Boys and would not let them move near to the fence, while the Border Collie went to the fence and grabbed the chain link in her mouth and shook it and growled.
My Shepherd, who I would consider a foolish pup, at less than two years old kept circling my grandkids into a small herd in the center of the yard, while SCREEMING for my help. All while the border collie charged the fence to keep away the invaders.

If your dog has ever been asaulted by kids, like the beastly kids in my neighborhood, your Shepherd is an inteligent animal with a long memory. He or She will defend your life against these street punks just like my dogs protected my grandsons against the invading human animals!

You Bet!

German Shepherd dogs are by far and wide the best all round dog. This has positive and negative effects. If they have been purchased to be a guard dog then that is what they will become. And a good one at that. If a child comes into contact with it how is the dog to know the child is not a threat? Of course any dog can become aggressive especially if a child is teasing it. Also children have a tendency to run up to a dog and stroke it. This should be strongly discouraged as dogs may react defensively. The German Shepherd usually is a good, well tempered dog. It is a shame but children and dogs should be supervised at all times especially if the children are not seen to be a part of the pack by the dog. Female dogs will become protective of there puppies if just had. thanks

German Shepherds as a breed are not agressive to humans, children or otherwise. They are normally very loyal dogs to the entire family regarless of size. Normally they can be very protective of the child and more as try to defend the child against someone they dont know.

However, depending on the dog's past, there are always things that can go wrong. If the dog has been irritated, it will probably growl/snap. I'm not saying that all dogs will do this, but some dogs just have quicker tempers then others, just like people. No matter what breed of dog you choose, it is possible for the dog to growl and snap at your child.

In the end, never leave your child unsuperised with your dog even if the dog has proven itself to be as nice as humanly (dogly?) possible. You would not want to take the chance of your dog injuring or killing a young child because of an errand that had to be run, or even just walking across the street.

Any dog can be aggressive to children. The best thing to do is socialize the pup (any breed) with children from an early age to get the dog used to kids. GSDs in particular. They are smart and a high energy dog. They need stimulation so they don't become, well, crazy. They do very poorly when chained up to a tree out back with little or no attention.

Capt. Max von Stephanitz developed the breed for herding. This was their original intent. If you keep this in mind when considering this breed, you might understand more about the pup you bring home.

They are an amazing breed. But they are 'a lot of dog'!!

how old if a pup have to be strict right away and show a lot of attetion and love to animal. always a chance on animal and past history if older dog. I have a hybrid wolf 92%, 6% husky, 2%german sheperd and she is the best animal I have ever seen with children I have 2 under 5 and she babies them she is now 6 years old and is the most tender, loving creature ever, but a little protective of them is she doesn't know someone that trys to come over to the kids when she is around, if she doesn't know them she won't let them come close.

Any dog can be aggressive if provoked. Like if a kid is pulling on its tail or hair or ears, the dog may react aggressively. Of course the dog always gets blamed but I blame the parents for not teaching the child how to properly treat and animal.

I have been owned by 6 German Shephards. 4 males and 2 females. They are very protective of children especially. 2 of the males were aggressive towards strangers. But never bit anyone. They are very loyal to their family, and are super smart. I raised my children with them, without even one aggressive move towards them. I trust them fully, and wholeheartidly reccomend one for a family pet.

any dog can be aggressive, but sheperds can be more so if they aren't trained and disaplined properly. All dogs need appropriate training and plenty of exercise to keep them from resorting back to waht they were originally bred for, in the german sheperd's case, bite training and guarding. If a dog feels threatened and cornered, natural instincts will take over and they will fight. Your best bet, if you already have this dog, enroll in a training class immediatly with the whole family so everyone knows the 'rules', and if you are thinking of getting one, talk to several people who already own them and start training as soon as you get it home.

German shephers are known to be good with kids, but you have to take into consideration if the kids are rough with the dog, then the dog might growl or bite. Any dog is nice with kids if they are properly socialized when they are puppies.

Any dog can be aggressive to children and anyone else. It all depends on how they are raised and trained.
