Non-sticks are applied in layers, just like paint. The first layer is the primer - and it's the special chemistry in the primer that makes it adhere to the metal surface of a pan. The primer will adhere either to a substrate that is prepared by grit blasting or roughening the surface, or it can be applied over a smooth substrate.

They abrade (roughen) the surface of the pan to give it a "grippier surface to adhere to. They then "bake" it at a very high temperature to make the teflon concoction cure. This can only be done in very thin layers, which is why it's so easy to chip it when you use metal utensils.

a friend of mine had thier friend round and they offered to do the dishes, about an hour l8r they came and complained that they would of finished ages ago if not for this one dirty pan - they had scraped off half the telflon on his best frying pan - true story

Teflon is actually now believed to be toxic, so I wouldn't worry about it and just stay away.

cos the pan aint non stick - and cos I shouted STICK TO BLOODY PAN TEFLON - so It does....
