A dog under 40 pounds will live up to 14-15 years. The larger dogs like labs and retrivers live 8-10 years.

That is about 42 in people age, just about middle aged. We had a dog that lived for 12 years, it was a larger breed dog 12 years for a dog is 84 in people age a senior citizen. So 6 is still rather young, as long as the dog is healthy and lively, he or she should have a good life.

Typicaly smaller breed dogs live longer, and the larger a dog is that shorter it's life span. A smaller dog can live upwards of 20 years, some larger dogs may only live to be 7 or 8 years. On the flip side of that, I knew a great dane that lived to be 14 years which is amazing for that size dog. I have a 9 year old great dane now, and you wouldn't even know she's that old. She still very spunky for her age. The better care you take of your dog, the longer they will live.

6 years old isn't old at all. big dogs live for 10-12 years, and smaller dogs can live up to 15-16 years. it all depends on how good of a condition the dog is in.

It is determined by their breed. Bigger dogs are more prone to Cancer, hip problems, and so forth so their life may/is shorter. Then on the other hand some smaller dogs, such as dachshunds, have back problems. I would say look at the breed and do research. Six years is old for some dogs. I believe I heard that blue heelers live longer than any dogs. I have had Rotts in my life since i was itty bitty and the didnt live any longer than 8-10 years.

Dogs can live up to 16 years, it varies by the size of dog, the breed, and the health some dogs may live more then 16 years while others live less.

It depends......do you let it play in the traffic? If so then 6 is a good age, but it's probably going to take the big plunge soon.
Do you let it play on an apartment building roof...as in fetch the stick? If so, remember its a long drop....dogs do not always land on their feet.
If you have a safe back yard....and don't feed it table scraps....and depends on the breed of the dog, they can live to a real nice ripe old age. Mine is a lab x irish setter and she is 12 going on 13 in January. My other dogs lived to 14 and 17. I once had a dog live to a nice age of 22. Blind and deaf, passed away in her sleep.

It's not old. My dogs are nearing 6, and I don't view them as old. A large dog averages around 12 yrs. and smaller dogs average between 12-15. Some breeds have greater longevity than others.

My dog is 8 years old and she's still alive. It depends on a lot of things, how well you take care of your dog, how it's health is, how much/little you feed it. If all goes well your dog can even live up to a full .... I want to say 16 years.
