Tough Question.
I've had dogs of many breeds as pets over the years, and I've found many things to love about all of them.
At one time, I had a Norwegian Elkhound. She was--hands down--the least aggressive dog I have ever met. She would growl during playtime (tug-of-war type games), but otherwise she would not make any sort of aggressive move toward anyone. Fortunately, she didn't have to; she wasn't very big, but she looked rather dangerous (she had a little accident when she was a puppy....involving a cat. It left a scar on her lip, which gave her a permanent "snarl"). She was a great "family" dog. Alas, she passed on several years ago, when she was about 20 years old (a ripe old age for a dog! then again, she had very little stress).
Some years later, I had a grey wolf/husky hybrid. He was the smartest dog I have ever met...I'm sure that in my absence, he did New York Times crossword puzzles. He was also a very good-looking dog...very large, with cream-colored fur from head to tail. He wasn't massive (at most, he weighed about 110 pounds), but he had very long limbs, and his fur was kind of fluffy, so he looked enormous. He loved me unconditionally, and there were a few people that he liked. There were a few more people that he tolerated. And everyone else, he ignored. Unfortunately, he developed epilepsy when he was about 3 years old (it's sort of common among wolf hybrids). He was taking medication for it, but he eventually died during a seizure when he was only about 4 years old. I knew it was a possibility all along, but it still hit me very hard when it happened.
In-between, I've had all sorts of "mutts". I really don't have a specific breed that I'd call my favorite...as long as our personalities are compatible, I can get along with pretty much any dog.

Australian Shepherd is a great breed, if you like to do more with a dog than cuddle! They're smart, energetic, loving and good looking. I'm a bit fascinated with Nova Scotia Duck Toller Retrievers, right now, too. They are lively and great looking dogs. I'm not truly fond of toy dogs, but in that group, I can see myself enjoying a Cavalier King Charles Spaniel. Maybe that's in my future when I am old! I guess, I like happy dogs, really!

Most Med to Large breed dogs.. I have to say I am not fond of the small YIP YIP dogs.. Any thing under 30 lbs is a cat !! I know that does not please dog owners , however I prefer larger dogs.. I want something the kids can play with and not break .... and something that doesn't bark all the darn time.... and something that is not hyper ... which is the definition of a small dog.

German Shepards. I have had many of them and love them. I also love the mixed breeds. Pure breeds have had the brains breed out of them. If you mix a lab or retriever with another breed you will get a smart loveable dog. I have had a black lab/shepard mix and a black lab/cocker spaniel mix. Both were exceptional dogs.

I like most breeds of dogs, but have a certain love and respect for bully breeds. APBT's, Amstaffs, Staffys, any of the bull doggies!
