Er... because it has chocolate added to it. Of course it's going to be thicker and darker. Did you think chocolate milk came out of a cow that way?

Actually, the kind you buy at the store already in the carton has some gelatin added that makes the chocolate not settle to the bottom and consequently makes the consistency thicker. If you make it at home with just chocolate syrup and milk and then let it stand for a few minutes, all the chocolate settles to the bottom of the glass. I like it any way I can get it :-)

In chocolate processing alkaline potassium carbonate are added to the fermented cocoa beans, increasing their pH. This dissolves away some of the tannins in the cocoa liquor (reducing the bitterness of the chocolate) and also increases the brown colour of the remaining tannins. This process is called “Dutching” because it was first used in Holland. So my friend your chocolate milk is darker because it contain chocolate & chocolate contain the polyphenol, Tannin. which makes it darker!..

the consistany of the chocolate, or chocolate powder adds density to it. Oh, and the dark pigments in the chocolate make it, well, dark. :]
