A consonant is a letter of the alphabet that represents a harder sound made by momentarily stopping or diverting the breath rising up from the vibrating vocal chords, as by touching the tongue against the palate (d, t) or by closing the lips (b, p), by sending breath around the tongue (L), by sending the breath through a restricted opening (y, v, w, s, z, f, h, j, r), by combining two or more of these (x), or by blocking the path of air during speech and sending the breath through the nose (m, n).

Vowels represent the rest of our spoken sounds, which are made up simply of a certain shaping of our open mouths around the expelled air coming up through the vocal chords..
