what would preserve wood ,sleepers,fence posts,thats cheap ie deisel

I live on a farm and we change the oil in our vehicles. I save the old oil, and pour it on fence posts and railroad ties that we use with the oil, and it does help preserve for awhile. These are not items that are around the house, just in the barn area.

Hmm.. what kind of preservation are we talking about? Fine furniture? Immersed logs in a dock? House siding? Fence posts? Cigar boxes? There are different techniques for different tasks.
