Yes, that's true. We don't have an official language, but the Constitution and all documents like it were written in English so it's just understood that we're an English speaking country.

No, the United States has never had an official national language -- and throughout its history many languages have been spoken along with English. A quick search on "United States official language" led us head-on into controversy. Many citizens feel strongly that the government should establish English as the official language of the United States, a view expressed in the mission statement of English First. Other Americans believe that linguistic diversity is a key aspect of our heritage and that English-only laws are motivated by fear and by false stereotypes about non-native speakers, a view supported in this ACLU Briefing Paper.

It is true.
There is quite a controversy over the matter however. Many people have long felt that English should be declared the official language of the US. Others feel that doing so would out up barriers to members of our definitively diverse society.
What are the benefits? What would the draw-backs be? How have other countries handled this issue and what were their motivations?

I dont feel like doing a whole lot of research because I dont remember the precise sources but I do remember that when the United States of America was formed congress voted which should be the official language and it came down to two; German and English. English was the most voted, by 1 vote!!
