Without knowing the issue you are talking about, I'd suggest the following:
--For a better understanding, let's say your boss falsely accused you of failing to do a report, for example. Ask he/she why they'd think you'd even consider being irresponsible.
-Integrity-In order to win your argument, you had to have done the right thing. I would say,"I did do the report. I am working to gain your trust (especially if you are new at a company) and I'd like to know why you think I am incapable of completing tasks successfully. Usually as soon as you position things as a 'I am trying to do the right thing but I am not 100% meeting your expectations you will get results.
-Don't respond to emotions-It's important when someone yells at you whether it's personal or professional that you read between the lines. In the example I provided, perhaps my boss was having a bad day or maybe he/she has a reason not to trust me--did I fail to do something.
If you yell back, the emotions escalate and nothing gets resolved.

Subtle sarcasm sometimes works. I'm not very assertive though.... So.... I'll say what looks professional.
Just say what you need to say or do what you need to do, and be polite about it. Don't make a big deal like it's putting someone out or anything either. It's rude NOT to be assertive. Good luck.

tell it like it is, but put the attitude asside. I am an assertive person, and get read the wrong way from time to time. Some people don't know how to tell the difference.

I don't know. I will always be perceived as rude when I assert myself. I think sometimes it is because I'm a woman, but who knows?

You've asked an extremely general question. There are many ways, depending on the situation.

By being honest! People respect sincerity, so they are less likely to be offended.

Personally I think that your tone and demeanor are key.
You can state what you would like but do it in a kind way..
say please and thank you and just be honest.

The tone in your voice---tone it down--but MEAN WHAT YOU SAY--
and look them straight in the eye.
