They aren't the worst type of dog. They aren't completely ugly (look at a shar-pei! So ugly they're cute). The reason that pit bulls have such a bad rap is because the worst type of people are the ones who commonly get these dogs. They want a dog they can scare peole with, and make themselves feel tough and strong. Meanwhile, it isn't fair to the dog. I've met some pitties that were wonderful, sweet dogs who wanted nothing more than a cuddle and some scritches around the ears. I've also met some small dogs (poms, terriers, shih tzu's)
that were little jerks. It usually isn't the dog, it's usually the owner that creates problems. They can't help what they were bred for, but they can certainly be trained to be loving and loyal. Sounds like a good dog to me!

Pitbulls are not the worst dogs in history. They are misunderstood. The "bad" dogs are bred and owned by irresponsible people who fail to train them correctly. Traits are bred, they aren't learned.
Also these dogs were trained to fight as a sport many many many years ago. They would fight to the death. People paid to watch the fights and they also bet on the dogs. One of their traits was to grab on to the other dog by sinking their teeth into the opponent and not letting go.
Pitbulls can grab on to something, like a large tree branch and hold on while being hoisted into the air. They will keep holding on until they are let back down on the ground.
This temperment is being bred out of the dog. But until it is successful, the dog has been banned from many cities.
Pitbulls are no more aggressive than German Shepherds. And any dog, depending on the training, even a cute adorable pom will attack.
If you treat a dog with kindness, therefore training the dog with kindness, you will have a good dog.
Ugly, No I don't think so.
Just so you know. I do not own a pitbull. I do own a German Shepherd and a Pom.

I have two, and I think they are beautiful. They are not the "worst" type of dog in history. They are misunderstood, and misrespresented by the media.
Many so called "pitbull" attacks don't even involve pitbulls...a lot of people don't know how to tell the difference between a pitbull and many other breeds of dogs, so the media portrayal is inaccurate.
There are many good books about the breed out there, Pit Bulls for Dummies, and Animal Planet has one out now, too. Please do some research before asking such a question.

Pitbulls (or, to specify, Pitbull Terriers) are not the worst dog in history. In fact, if you consider the number of dog-related injuries throughout "history", you'll likely discover that mixed-breed dogs are resposible for most of them. There are simply far more "mutts" than there are of any given breed.
Pitbull Terriers were originally bred to be fighting dogs (dog vs. dog, for gambling/entertainment purposes). They have a great deal of upper body strength; not designed for speed, but for agility. They also have very powerful (and wide) jaws, so they can inflict the most damage possible to their opponent, AND so they can latch on and not let go. They also have fairly small ears, and their jowls are typically very lean. This gives their opponents very little to hold on to during a fight.
Unless a PB is trained as a fighting dog, he won't behave like a fighting dog. If he's not trained to attack on command, then he won't do it. This is not to say that a Pitbull, or any other dog, wouldn't defend his master if necessary. Even the most docile, gentle breeds of dogs can be ferocious if something is threatening their family. Imagine a Golden Retriever--considered to be one of the gentlest breeds--reacting to a burglar, who has broken into his family's home (especially if it happens at night, when the family is asleep). The Retriever is going to chew the burglar's face off. Does that mean that Goldie is a killer? Of course not; he's just protecting his family.
If a Pitbull (or any other breed) is raised with kindness, patience, and tolerance, he'll turn out to be a friendly, sociable pet. A PB is still going to have the strength and energy that are inherent to his breed, but he can be taught to channel them productively.
And they're not ugly, at least not by my standards. Some of them are a little funny-looking, maybe, but they're not ugly. How do you think we look to them??

Pits are just being given a bad rap by all the stupid people who believe the hype about them being killers and all that. I was raised climbing around pits and I have seen many pits that didn't come out of crime which have wonderful temperaments. All dogs have to be socialized or else they will be biters and cause problems. Pits are just being bought by everybody and not being taken care of which is causing our problem. Were everyone who purchased a dog required to take a class of how to raise and train dogs, there wouldn't be a single dog bite reported.

They are not the worst dogs in history, the owners are. Stop listening to all the crazy stories. I owned two for thirteen years, they were the most wonderful dogs I have ever had. If you don't have a responsible owner, then the dog becomes the worst dog. No fault of the dog.

Well my daughter has one and some folks think he is very beautiful, other think he's ugly. Unusual looking dogs are an aquired taste. Who but a poodle owner thinks that breed is cute.
Their (pit's) behavior seems very typical of other dogs to me. I think they tend to fall into bad hands, and people who are bad pet owners are probably more drawn to them. They also have such strong jaws that if they do bite, the damage is worse than that of another breed. Other than that, I think they are like any dog.

They are beautiful and very smart they just have a bad reputation. A dog, any dog, is what you make it. My pittbull, Penny, is very sweet, gentle and loving. But she will stand her ground and protect her territory and her family against any other dog and strange people. She's just protective. And she's just great!

They're not the worst dogs in history, it's the people wjo own them that make them awful. They're really dopey and docile when just left alone and not trained to rip and maim and kill. I guess they just have that aggressive gene and it all depends on what's done with it.
