Your local shelter or ASPCA is a good place to start - They have pets for adoption - you need to just give a donation for their care and shots etc. Usually about $60 - $100. These local shelters keep animals as long as they can - but then if they are overcrowded they are forced to put some to sleep. So I would consider saving an animals life this way. Also always have the animal checked out after you adopt it by a local vet (not from the shelter - the Shelter gives it the shots that are mandatory - however there are in rare cases some things an animal can get from being in a shelter that they might have missed or might not treat and this would be your responsibility - like worms - harmless to us humans - but the animal will get very skinny from them for one thing.) Anyway , if this is not an option for you then you can try a local newspaper for free animals also.

Sometimes there are volunteer groups that adopt the animals from the shelters if they are to be put down because of overcrowding in the shelter - these groups then run ads in the papers to help get the word out there for them to be adopted.

Some owners might advertise they need to give up their pet -
just be really careful about the reason why they are giving them up - some will lie - the animal can be spiteful, dirty, bite etc... so always take your time when adopting. The local shelter however is not allowed to adopt out an aggressive animal unless they specifically tell you that and also they will tell you if they think any of the animals they have might not get along with other animals/kids etc... whereas a private party might not tell you any of this – they might want to just get rid of their problem. (Not all though – that is why you need to be very careful and take your time and trust your instincts)

defiantly the POUND/shelter those sweet little guys need a home soooo badly...or do what I did and wait for one to just come and find you at your house...I wasn't even thinking about getting a dog ..but there was this tiny little guy on my porch...he may be a mutt but he is smart, cute and sweet. He was about 2 months old at the time , now he's a year old and sooo well behaved!
