I was just talking to my son about that yesterday while I was doing the dishes. I have a terrible mouth, I cuss a lot. Even in conversation with him. But he asks me if he is allowed to say certain words. He was listening to a Disturbed song and told me that he is not allowed to sing it because it has cussing in it. So I asked him if he cusses without me or any adult around, and to answer honestly because I wouldn't get mad; and he said he didn't.
Then I told him that I wouldn't get upset because I was cussing at his age (my dad had a worse mouth then me, wouldn't admit it and never told me to not speak like that) but to not do it around me, adults, parents or teachers; that he needs to show them respect. I also told him to not use me as an example in that situation. That my mouth is terrible (which he knows).
He chooses not to cuss. I love him so much. I can only hope to make him like me, only better!!!!

Mom's/Dad's are their child's own best and worst example and, if they want to give that example to their child then I am sure they will be a shining example for them. Sure, they will learn and, I hope that mine will know that there is a time and a place. I once read that people who use profanity lack sophistication of the mind, or something to that effect. I think that it is important to teach our children that the dictionary has many, many more definitions for words that society has deemed as "bad words". I think that the point to not using bad language around children, is to teach them that it should not be used in every day language and; so that there is always a high level of respect that is maintained through the family.

Well... I always wondered the same thing, but I guess its because you don't want to be sitting around the house listening to your children saying "F*** this F*** that." at six years old. You want the kids to know that home is NOT the place to be using profanity. Trust me, I had an ex boyfriend whose mother said every cuss word in the book and his 7 year old brother was running around calling everybody B****es all day and saying S*** all the time. I thought it was the strangest thing seeing a kid saying those things, especially infront of his parents. Sure they are just words... but, he was very rude to his mother and didn't listen to her and would just tell her to shut the f*** up. So... I guess the children dont learn to respect you... or something like that.... ::shrugs::

Anyone who uses profanity has a inept use of the English language. It's such display of being a show-off and all they're doing is showing off their ingnorance.
I hate to see adults use inappropriate language whether it's around kids or not. To prove how ridiculous it is, listen to pre-teens and teens dropping F bombs around each other, younger kids, or adults. They actually think it makes them appear more mature because they have learned it from adults!
Do as I say and not as I do is a very poor excuse for adults to swear. Walk the walk and talk the talk.

I think it is because most people are afraid that when their child uses it in front of other adults they will look at them like they are letting their child do something wrong. All kids will try to say words they learn. It is up to the parent to let them know what is the wrong ones to use.

I don't say them around my little girl just because i don't want to set that kind of example because if mommy does it then she will think its ok.I know she will here those words but i teach her they are not lady like to say and they just make you sound ignorant.Like i said i know she will hear them but she will know that her family doesn't approve and maybe when she is an adult she will not do it because it won't be a habit.

It is not why people use profinity around children that I am concerned about.
It is more like why peoplo ye seem to that it is less offensive to use profanity as an adult that is the problem.

Yeah they will learn it from everyone else,, and every other Irresponsible parent out there,, but if you dont say it,, that gives you something that no one else does..
does mommy or daddy say that? NO
sooo dont say that again.
believe me,, teaching by example is better then letting them learn by strangers!
