Having Barabbas executed would have disrupted Barabbas's criminal organization, and that would have interfered with the free flow of illicit pharmaceuticals for a while.

Jesus was notorious than popular to the Jew after healing on a Sabbath Day which is very Holy for them and the sign between the Jews and God for generations to come and then claiming he is a Son of God which si blasphemy for them and punishable by death. Barabas could have been likened to Robin Hood who was a thief robbing only the rich and in that time when Romans are seen among the affluent society and those Jews who have the blessings of the Roman Empire, it is possible that Barrabas could also have had many friends who like him in that crowd.

The Romans were in power and had appointed a king. They tolerated religious gatherings, but anyone other than the person appointed by Rome claiming to be king would have been prosecuted for sedition!
Rallie Florencio: Jews have always allowed healing on the sabbath. Saving a life takes precedence over all other laws. Perhaps the crowd believed it was magic he performed rather than miracles...

Mat_27:17
Whom will ye that I release ... - Pilate was satisfied of the innocence of Jesus, Luk_23:13-16
He was therefore desirous of releasing him. He expected to release one to the people. He knew that Jesus, though condemned by the chief priests, was yet popular among the people He therefore attempted in this manner to rescue him from the hands of the priests, and expected that the people would prefer Him to an odious and infamous robber and murderer. Had the people been left to themselves it would probably have been done.
Mat_27:20
Persuaded the multitude - The release of a prisoner was to be to the people, not to the rulers.
The rulers, therefore, in order to secure the condemnation of Jesus, urged on the people to demand Barabbas. The people were greatly under the influence of the priests. Galileans among the citizens of Jerusalem were held in contempt. The priests turned the pretensions of Jesus into ridicule. Hence, in a popular tumult, among a flexible and changing multitude, they easily excited those who, but a little before, had cried Hosanna, to cry, Crucify him.

Passage Matthew 27:15-18: (Specifically 18)
15Now it was the governor's custom at the Feast to release a prisoner chosen by the crowd. 16At that time they had a notorious prisoner, called Barabbas. 17So when the crowd had gathered, Pilate asked them, "Which one do you want me to release to you: Barabbas, or Jesus who is called Christ?" 18For he knew it was out of envy that they had handed Jesus over to him.
Passage Matthew 27:20:
20But the chief priests and the elders persuaded the crowd to ask for Barabbas and to have Jesus executed.

Jesus knew he would not be loved by all . He knew this because not every one wanted to hear the truth . Thats actually the way it is today. If you believe the way people want you to believe ( Pointing no fingers here ) Then your good to them. But if you know what they are saying is untruth , then it is like Jesus went threw. Pains and sorrow but Glory for the Truth. That is why the scriptures tell us to Make sure of All things (Bible Truth ) and Hold fast to it !

Because the crowd was filled with people who were specifically picked out by His enemies. These people would stir up hatred against Him and the rest of the crowd would follow. Group Psychology 101.

Because people would rather not know that there is a peaceful way of life with everyone living as one. Some would rather live in anger and fear because its better the''devil '' you know than the one you don't sort of thing. And in a mob like that nobody with an different point of view would speak up.

Because people are scared and stupid. And lets face it a crowd is made up of people. Tell people as a groups do this or die, well they are going to do what you say. Individuals are smart. I bet if they had taken a quiet vote with no one knowing who voted which way they would have spared Jesus.
