Nothing. Just a ploy for tv and cable companies to suck a couple thousand dollars out of you so you can "have the best technology."

If you really want HDTV, wait a year or 2 when supply and demand reduces the price.

My view is that its not worth it, my tv isnt HDTV and I can watch it just fine.

A good HDTV picture is far better than standard TV. In addition to higher resolution, you get Dolby Digital Surround Sound, and widescreen TV. However, the real advantage to HD comes with larger screen TV. It doen't really make that much difference if your TV screen size is less that 30", and really 40" should be the minimum to get value out of HDTV. Whether it is worth it for you depends on how you watch TV. If you only watch casually while doing something else, it's probably something you don't need. Howver, if you enjoy watching sports, or movies, or other programs of quality, HDTV is an enormous benefit. I suspect that in a few years, non-HDTV sets will be rare, and almost all programs will be broadcast in HD (they are almost that way now--far more in HD than not).

The picture is sharper and looks more real. Regular TV's usually go at 30 frames-per-second while some HDTV go at 60 fps or more. Many other features.

Other than a crystal clear picture that looks as good as a movie theater, nothing special.

Sharper picture, more colors, deeper and truer colors, more resolution, more dimensions (i.e. 3-D depth), more contrast, etc.

You really should compare for yourself. If you appreciate a good picture over a mediocre one, then you owe it to yourself to see what's on the cutting edge of picture quality. You might just get spoiled. I did. :-)
