That's horrible but please don't blame your friend for this.I'm sure he/she feels as bad as you do about the whole thing.
You really should have had the dog on -leash until you reached a place where it was completely safe for him to be off of it.Regardless of a dogs age it's still like having a toddler underfoot and great care must be taken to keep them from danger every minute of every day until the dog passes due to old age.
Your posting has proved once again that it only takes a split second for tragedy to strike. And I hope that others will learn something from it and keep an ever-watchful eye on their pet.
As soon as you can go get another dog.It won't take this ones place but will help fill the hole the loss of this one's made in your hearts.

OMG!!!! im sooooooooo sorry, I have 8 dogs, trust me I have dealt with this kind ofd lose b-4. I understand, it hurts when you think about any thing to do with friend who has past, animals have a place deep in our hearts that we dont realize is there until that place is ripped out. Any lose is traddgic but animals are a hole nother thing, Tell your son that his beloved friend has gone to the rainbow bridg, If he doesnt understand then tell him it is a place where all dogs go to when they die ( die may be a little strong right now, use pass away) The old dogs turn to young fuzz puppys again and its filled with all the stuff his dog loved, and that he is watching over you and him both, Because he is, and when the time is right surprize him with a puppy and tell him you found him under your bed and it was a gift from your former dog (this is great for younger kids not suggested for 8 and up) well Im terribly sorry about your dog and i will pray for you and your family, and remember all dogs young or old big or small they leave pawprints on your heart.
p.s. and i heard about steve irwin, the animals lost a best friend there, you would of never thought he could die, he was like superman of the animal world, invincable.
maby this will help, go to google and type in dog poems and click images, read the rainbow brige, a great poem, read some others to,once again sorry about your dog i had one for 14 years (im only 14 years old) She was killed by another dog.

NO this is not your fault. I don't see how your wife can blame you for this. It was a horrible accident and unfortunately blacky was unable to be saved.
Your son will get over it. I'd wait a few months before getting a new dog. And when you do ALWAYS walk him on a leash.
I had this happen to me only it was a stranger who ran over my dog. And the bastard didn't bother to stop or give me and the dog a ride home. So now I have an injured dog I had to get home on a bike. Thank god he was a small dog. He didn't make it either.
Always walk your dogs on a leash. This was not your fault.

I'm truly sorry about your loss. I am, we are, extremely close to our dog too and the thought of losing him is unbearable. Anyway I would have your son talk about his feelings, although depending on his age, that may be difficult. I personally wouldn't want to get a new dog too quickly. I'm sure if your your best friend is truly your best friend he is upset for the loss too, so try not to be too hard on him. Honestly only time will make you all feel better. Good Luck and again I am sorry for your loss.

I am sorry for your loss, losing a pet is never easy. There are listings on the internet that can provide you with information on dealing with the grief of losing a pet, otherwise, I believe that Cornell University, New York has a pet grief hotline www.vetcornell.edu.public/petloss or 607-253-3932. Take Care and God Bless.

So sorry for your loss, do whatever you can to help your son through this. Let him cry if he wants, let him grieve, but don't let him forget that life goes on . Since most of us feel that our pets are family members, we tend to take it hard when they die.
Maybe you can have a remembrance ceremony for the dog, you can lay him to rest under his favorite tree and each of you can say a few things you will remember about the dog. It will take time, but things will get easier for your son, just be there for him. Some of life's lessons are hard to deal with. Again I am sorry.

Pet loss is not funny. I would defeinitely think about having a memorial for your dog or doing a scrapbook. Let your son know that its okay to mourn the loss of a pet, because many in our culture look upon tham as family members. There may be more info on current support groups on the below site for the human animal bond.
please accept my sympathies and condolences at your loss,
-a veterinarian

It is a really horrible thing, but as with all horrible things that happen in your life, the hurt will pass. My daughter got a kitten on her fourth birthday. It followed her everywhere and being an only child at the time, they were in seperatable. It would follow her to the corner of our drive every morning and she would play with him till the bus came. One day we were out at the bus stop playing with Mojo(that was his name), and after she had gotten on the bus, he had followed her up and I didn't notice. After she got in and the doors closed, he was rubbing on the bottom stair, and when the bus started to move he got scared and ran, and ended up getting hit by the back tire. Not only my daughter notice, but the bus driver did too and stopped, and the whole bus load of about 25 plus kids seen our poor kitty smashed. He was totally crunched and pressure had burst his organs threw his rectum. Being so young my daughter was so heart broken. Even as gross as it was, we scooped him up and we kept her home that day and we buried him under our flag pole. My daughter is going to be 9 and every year seance that has happened on the day he was hit we out and put a fake flower in the ground for him. It is just a reminder that even though he is gone that he is not forgotten. That helper her allot more. That way she could see where he was even after he passed

Dealing with the Death of a pet is the same as dealing with the death of a family member or friend. It is hard. You will go throughthe same grieveing process. You will be less devastated as time goes on. Say a prayer and give it time.

Search the poem "The Rainbow Bridge" it is sad and may make him cry, but it will give him a lovely picture in his head. maybe it will help him get rid of the devastating thoughts of witnessing the accident. Personally curious, did the friend apologize to your family? Best of luck.
