first you gotta build the muscle for the hard then to show the rocked abs you gotta cut your bodyfat. Some awesome muscle building for abs are leg lifts or roman chair situps. DON'T overdo abs like any other muscle group doing 100 situps isn't as good as mythed. To lower your bodyfat you gotta do some running 15-30 min 3-4 times a week and eat a clean healthy diet.

Sit-ups and crunches and the like will strengthen them fine but you won't see them. I'm thinking that what you want is not just hard abs but you want to see the washboard effect. You need to lose weight and that means cardiovascular work and a healthy diet. Aerobics, running, whatever. You'll need to drop fat AND do abs to get that nice mid-section. There is no such thing as spot reduction (aside from lipo perhaps). It's the same ol' story.

1st of all go to MensHealth.com order the Abs Diet book follow the easy to prep. foods from the recipes inside and follow the exercise program as if it were a religion . I am on the diet and have lost 20 lbs of gut and gained some lean muscle to replace it

If you just want the muscle definition, it doesn't have a lot to do with using the muscles; burning fat has been proven to reveal abs better than sit-ups. Sprints are the best exercise.

Fitness and diet cant just be a little part of your life, it has to be your lifestyle and obsession. A low fat/carb diet is key.

pretend there's a string inside of you attached to your belly button and your back, and it's pulling. (so just suck in alot) hold it for a while, and you'll start seeing the difference. sorry i suck at explaining things.
