If you are petting her when this happens, she may have gotten over stimulated. Some cats do from petting. Looks for signs of a lashing tail, laid back ears, or tenseness. Stop petting if you see these and put her on the floor.

She could just be like that. Some cats have somewhat of a bi-polar personality. You may find a good result from trying this thing called Comfort Zone with Feliway found at PetSmart and Petco. It has calm-down pheromones in it to help kitty stay relaxed.

My female Cat is quite most of the time, and then She will leap long distances, past My head while I am on the computer to sit near Me. Do You keep Her nails clipped? She may have just wanted to play, but didn't know Her sharp claws would do so much damage. After that happened was She calm? She could have been upset about something, and She might have just wanted to play. Look around where You were, like behind You, do You see anything She might want to get at? We have male Cats that are younger and pester our older Female, that sometimes gets Her rambunctious.

Be sure and clean the cuts really well with hydrogen peroxide, and put a triple antibiotic on it. Hopefully this won't happen again, but if it does make sure Her nails are kept clipped back, that will help tremendously. And bleed the wound some to extract any possible bad bacteria.

If She is good the rest of the time, She may just want to be loved, want Your attention, stressed out, scared, or bored. Try getting a feather on a string and play with Her. And a clean sock, tied with catnip in it will calm Her down. Keep it in Your room. You will have to switch it out from time to time, because they will drool all over it.

Sorry this happened, sounds like You care about Her though. So just keep trying different methods, and hopefully You will be living in peace very soon.

God Bless and Best Wishes

A lot of the previous answers are correct, I have three cats and only have this problem with one of them. Was this cat close to anyone that has passed away since this started happening? If so this is the cats way of showing you that they miss that person, my cat was a daddy's boy and now he always hisses and lashes out at me and my kids. I have tried to explain to my kids that the cat does not mean to hurt them. I feel that the cat is angry because he/she has been left unaware of what has happened. My cat sometimes plays and is attracted to what seems nothing, but I believe that my late husband is still in my house and is communicating with his beloved cat, often my other cats can be sound asleep and then just wake up and stare at one spot in the room. At this stage I generally talk to the cats and then say hello to my hubby, and the cats will go back to sleep.

There could also be an anxiety problem with your cat, so maybe a trip to the vets is not a bad idea as there is medication that can be given to her when she does lash out.

GOOD LUCK WITH YOUR KITTY.

Sounds very much like my cat My tabby tearaway was a rescued kitten from my workplace she is a Feral cat her mother was run over by a fork lift truck but she had not been weened off the nipple when I adopted her so had to bottle feed her for a couple of months but even after a rocky start to life she survived and is still alive now she is 6 years old and I honestly think she believes I am a mother cat substitute have you ever watched a litter of kittens they squabble all the time for mums attention my beastie got so bad at one time If I invited a girl back the cat used to force her way in between us ! on the sofa my little monster had a set regime and if I dared to change it there was hell to pay my alarm clock go,s off at 5 am if I press the snooze button and go back to sleep I get a bitten foot for 5 minutes extra sleep if I dare to go to the toilet before I go into the kitchen to first feed her I get scratched ankles when I come out of the toilet coincedence I hear you all say but for a whole week I tried a little experiment on the monday went into the toilet first = scratched ankles net day kitchen first just a nice little rub around the ankles ,next day loo first scratched next day kitchen+food no probs and it went on so I had proved my suspicion That she set the days agenda my cat would sit on your lap qite happily until she got bored then her next course of action was to jump on the back of the sofa and claw my neck but for no particular reason other than she felt like doing it cats are not like dogs! cats train you not the other way around but for all her little eccentricties I would not be without her or change her in any way because she has a unique personality which is some times very funny and sometimes very naughty mine also has a mad 5 minutes of house running about but you cannot imagine what she can hear scurrying about under the floor boards . so she is not so differant from other cats and we have had lots! and purring is not always a sign of happiness cats often purr when they have had a serious injury dont forget they also get toothache and earache sometimes and that makes a human grumpy as well

She probably has pent up enegry and wants to play but isn't able to express herself.

Get some motion toys that randomly activate to keep her jumping and attacking things that aren't your arm.

Certainly make sure she knows attacking with claws is unacceptable but it truly sounds like she is missing the hunter aspect of her normal cat genes- a cat toy or similiar she can pounce and chase might do the trick- otherwise consider getting her declawed in the front at least.

I had a similar experience with one of my cats a spayed female I could be just stroking her gently and then she would attack my hand - she did this in front of the vet after a number of visits and he said nothing was wrong with her which I disagreed and kept taking her back and in the end the vet gave her some hormone tablets a high dose to start with and then tappered off until she was no longer taking them and she was fine afterwards.

You need to watch her behaviour, cats like the attention on their terms, as someone else mentioned if her tail is lashing back and forth or you can feel her tensing up - she has had enough. You also need to put down some ground rules, let her know you are boss and not her.

Cats need to play, to be stimulated as if hunting, this is one reason they bolt around the house, they have pent up energy and need to release it. Try playing with your cat more, get her attention and keep it...

i would take this cat to the vet to make sure theres no problem. cats do have mad 5 minutes just like dogs but there claws are sharper. this may be medical or behavioural. rule out med first a dap diffuser may help to calm her down and you do not say whether she lives in or out or both as it could also be lack of stimulation she may need more to do

Cats often do 'crazy' seeming things.
She could be play fighting. Is she a mouser??
Cats do sometimes tear around for no apparrant reason and do allsorts of funny and 'vicious' kinda things. They are little lions after all.
If theres apattern find it.
e.g is it always at night when your'e reading??
Does she get outdoors enough??

Cats are independent, unpredictable creatures with original personalities. Although cats COULD have mental issues like a human being, cats are active, perceptive, and very playful animals that enjoy their "bursts" of energy. Like perpetual human two-year-olds, they've got non-sense energy to burn, especially the indoor-only cats (which is healthier for them anyway).
You can keep your cats' claws clipped, probably front AND back, and you may want to consider a non-harsh, natural remedy like flower essences. You may want to check out:
