If you are overweight, do the 2 miles twice a day.
You won't hurt yourself and you'll be doing your body a favor by working out twice with quality than with quantity. You can walk or more energetically small distances than longer distances. After a while, you will see the increased stamina and you can add more mileage to your walk. Just try to keep a consistent speed, not too vigorous. Or, if you feel that your stamina has increased, carry a one-pound weight in each hand while doing the 2-mile walk. In time, add another mile and keep the one-pound weights. Little by little, you will see the positive change. Hey, why not take a swimming class, too? That' way, you can have fun and later add swimming laps, too, and you'll get some aerobic exercise, too. Good luck and best wishes.

I think it's better to walk 2 miles twice per day. It keeps you more active throughout the day. It really depends on how quickly you've become tired though.

I have just gone through a physical training class and this very question was brought up. It doesn't matter how you do the four miles. You will burn the same amount of calories doing 2mi twice or 4mi once. Something even more crazy is that you will burn just as many calories walking 4mi as running 4mi!! Sounds nuts, I know. The only difference is that you get it done quicker if you run. :O)

i am no expert on fitness, but i would think that twice a day would be a better solution.
actually, it is commonly thought that serious aerobic workouts [four mile jogs] that demand your heart to race are bad for you. think about it, our bodies aren't designed to exert ourselves for long periods of time then rest a longer period of time. that's like only having a car you use once a week for a twenty mile sprint at it's top speed- it probably wouldn't last too long.
our bodies are designed to work: plowing, harvesting, gathering, building houses, hunting..... none of that really requires a fast heart rate for extended periods of time, but it requires fitness. also, it is considered bad for your skeletal structure to run or walk for long periods of time on hard surfaces. again, our bodies aren't made to work on cement.
as i said, i am not an expert on fitness, but i have done some reading and this is what i came accross. it makes sense to me, but you can just chuck it out of the window if you don't like it. but what i would suggest, is possibly looking into some hobby you've always wanted to try but never have done: tennis, martial arts, swimming, horses..... i don't know if that's an option for you, but it might be worth considering. or, maybe just walk along the beach [if that's an option], or find some nice trails to use. make it enjoyable.
but, as always, you should do your own research with sources you think are dependable. just find something that works for you.
good luck

it is the same amount but if you do it all in one shot your chance s of completing it are more then they would be if you took two trips life happens and you might have unexpected things pop up and get in the way or you might just be plain tired by the time you decide to go on the second trip gl

When boredom, depression, as well as stress causes cravings, find a nonfood way in order to meet them such as taking a walk, calling a friend, getting a bath, reading a book, or perhaps doing some yoga.
