I'd like to know the pros and cons of buying a hybrid car. What are some things I should know? Any models that perform better than others? How do they compare in price to their non-hybrid counterparts? If anyone has a hybrid, I'd like your opinion on the drive, convenience, value, problems, etc.

Ten points to the most thorough, detailed answer.

I've studied, driven & experimented with Hybrids extensively.

I increased my mpg by over 100% in a Ford Hybrid Escape vs a non-hybrid 6 cyl Escape.

there are several types of hybrids on the market:
Full Hybrid (like the Escape- shuts off the gas engine at idle & at speeds of up th 30-35 mph)
Mild Hybrid (like the Accord only shuts off the gas when stopped, as long as you don't have the a/c on)
Parrallel hybrid
Serial Hybrid
Plug-in Hybrid (like the Ford mail trucks being used in California)

go to http://hybridcars.com for all the etailes on how each of these types perform.

I LOVE the Escape!
Hybrid Escape starts @ about $26 g's
non-hybrid --4 cyl starts @ about $20 g's

Federal Tax credit for the Hybrid escape is $2600 FWD & &1900 4X4

The warranty on the battery is 100,000 miles & the maintenance is less expensive too. Ford recommends oil changes only once a year or every 10,000 miles, whichever occures first.

But what I really like about this vehicle is that it is so FUN to drive!
It actually feels more powerful than the 6 cylinder! & with all the money I save on gas I can 'shop till I drop' & I don't need to make more than one trip because there is sooooooooo much cargo space !!

For more info on this Hybrid go to : http://fordvehicles.com

G.M also has Hybrid trucks but you only gain 2 mpg. Thats because its only a 'Mild' hybrid.......What's the point? Well it does have extra power outlets so contracters can plug in like power tools at job sites where ther is no electricity

But the Escape (hybrid) also has an outlet ! So i can plug-in my laptop & save the battery, but I can also plug-in my hair dryer, curling iron, or even my toaster or blender (smoothies only--no margaritas when I drive)
Please Go Test Drive One ! You'll love it !

Look at the pros and cons. I work for a Honda dealer and there is about a three to four month wait time for a Hybrid. How much gas are you going to use while waiting for it? You are looking at a price difference of about $6,000 between the Hybrid and a comparably equipped LX. The only difference is 10 miles per gallon. Yes you get the federal tax credit, but it still might not be worth the difference in price if you usually end up owing the government.

Pros: they are good if you drive ONLY in the city, where they get best mileage.

Cons: very expensive, it can take a long time to compensate the difference of price over a conventional car, not so good gas mileage in the highway.
