I don't know where in the US you're at, but I can tell you what the steps are for Texas.

You have to be state certified to be a peace officer in the state of Texas. There are a couple of routes to take. One, you go to a police academy sponsored by a Community College or State College. You have to pay for this. Once you graduate, you can take the State Test for free (up to three times to pass) then find a department willing to hire you.

Another method is to find a police department that has its own academy. They pay you to go to the Academy and train you how they want you to be. After you graduate, you take your state test.

The third option is if you already have an Associates Degree (or at least the equivilant number of hours). If you pass the test (you only get one shot, it's called a challenge) you're state certified and just need to find a department willing to hire you.

Different departments have different requirements. Smaller ones won't require experience, a degree, or military service. Some departments will want a combonation of the three. Some will wave college for military experience.

Good luck.

Training requirements vary from state to state. When I was in training it was a minimum of 600 hours from a state certified facility. Not sure what it's up to now. And you were required to have a minimum of 40 hours of additional training.

Most of our training comes from OJT. But when we have in service training it is usually about the high liability issues such as firearms, defensive tactics, taser, domestic violence, first aid, cultural diversity, and driving.

Training is conducted by subject experts within the department.
