Am asking for my neighbor, who has no access to a computer. He has to go in for an operation for ulcerative colitis, and he asked me to ask you all if there is any new medicine for this condition, as he doesn't want to have the operation. (Which is an extremely radical operation....)

It may be too late if they are talking surgery.
I've had UC 7 yrs. I've been on all the meds

The ones that helped the colitis were prednisone & remicace
but the side effects can be brutal.
There are new meds in trials now, but this may be too late for him.
I'm sorry; I know what the pain is like. He can always ask for a 2nd opinion.

My friend has colitis, and told me they put him on Remicade. He said it is extremely expensive--but worked very well. It involves going to the hospital and having an IV. It is relatively new. I'm surprised your friend's doctor hasn't considered it.
Good luck

It sounds as if it is too late for any new medication to help him. There are several new ones available (I don't know if they"ve yet been approved by the FDA) but if he needs radical surgery I guess its too late for him. All you can do is to offer him sympathy and strength. It is not the end of the world.

If he hasn't tried Remicaid - have him try that. It is an IV drug administered once every couple of months. Some seem to have had great results.
