It sounds like a sprain a sprained ankle can be worse than a break and take longer to heal...
A sprained ankle happens when the ligaments have been damaged by the joint being twisted.

When you twist your foot or ankle, it usually twists inwards damaging the ligaments on the outside of the ankle. Outward twists damaging the inside ligaments are rare.

If you do not receive the appropriate treatment and allow the injury time to recover you will be more likely to sprain the area again.

A sprained ankle can be very painful.

Sometimes, the pain can be delayed, at other times it is instant. The level of pain is not always a measurement of the extent of the damage. Some people hear a 'pop' in their ankle. This could suggest a torn ligament. The twist is followed by swelling of the area.

Rapid swelling usually indicates severe damage has taken place. The swelling is caused by bleeding of the damaged tissue and the resultant bruise or discolouration is a result of gravity pulling the blood downwards. So the swelling is often situated a small distance away from the actual damaged site.
Injuries of this kind should receive first aid treatment following the RICE principle, which stands for Rest, Ice, Compression and Elevation. Cooling the injury as fast as possible will reduce the swelling and pain.

Hope I was able to help....

Well if its just a twist it wont be so bad. But if its an actual spraine its worse. Theyll run an x-ray on u(x rays dont hurt) then they'll probably give u an air cast not an actual cast(and aircast u can take of if u need to). I have had 2 ankle sprains and 1 ankle twist. When i had its sprained for the first time i was on crutches for almost 2 months and then about the same the second time which screwed me in soccer. The time i had a twist i was only out for a couple days. Yea, sprained ankles are the worst i think cuz you cant walk. Atleast with a broken arm u can walk( which ive managed to get a broken arm wrist and hand). Well good luck to you and o yea theyll probably have u on crutches for as many weeks as needed.

They will probably xray it to make sure that it is not broken. If it is a sprain they will probably immobilize it in a splint or cast. Before you get to the doctor it would be a good idea to elevate it and put ice on it to help the swelling go down. Try to not walk on it for the time being. I sprained my ankle a few years ago and it stays swollen for days or even weeks. You may need to be off it for a couple of weeks and then slowly get back to using it.

They are going to say elevate it - and keep ice on it.

Stay off your foot as much as possible! I have done this so many times it's not funny!

They also might prescribe something for the pain.

You should keep it elevated and bandaged until you get to the doctor. He will examine it and probably send you for an xray to make sure nothing is broken. If it's not broken then it will be bandaged and you will have to stay off it for a few days.
