Chesapeake Bay Retrievers are wonderful family members. They are a bit choosey and opinionated, picking a family member as their very own. They are attentive watch dogs, often having the sense to know when you feel threatened and when you don't.
Generally, Chessies are good with children. They sense youth and respond to it with a playful, take-care attitude. However, many Chessies can be too dominant or so active as to make it hard to have a Chessie and children. As with any breed of dog, care should always be taken to watch your children with your pets.
Chesapeake Bay Retrievers have won more awards for saving lives in rivers, ponds, lakes and even the ocean than any other breed, including Labrador Retrievers and Golden Retrievers. They are reputed to attempt to "save" children who are playing in the backyard swimming pool.
Chessies were bred to hunt. They were bred to fetch 100's of heavy water fowl from frozen winter waters of the northern USA. They are tough, independent, hearty and good-natured companions. With proper socialization and training, they are good obedience dogs. Chessies tend to work better for their owners than for a trainer. Often, Chessie owners show with their dogs rather than hiring professional handlers. As a result, the Chespeake ring can be a good way to break into the world of conformation showing. Of course, there will always be professional handlers in any breed, but fewer seem to handle Chesapeakes than some more popular breeds.
The Chessapeake hair coat is thick, and wavy, with a short under coat. Occasional brushing and rinsing with water is all that is required to keep the coat healthy and clean. They shed in fall and spring with the changes of season.
Chessies have lots of energy and require room to run and play. They tend to fetch just about anything. They are excellent swimmers and hunters. After burning up excess energy, they become part of the livingroom rug. They are hearty eaters.

They absolutely love to be in water. They're beautiful and fairly intelligent. But Golden Retrievers are my favorite.

they love the water, they need lots of excercise and they have slightly oily coat (makes it more water resistant). Personality similar to other retrievers. Good with kids very affectionate.

Nice dogs. Great with children. They're very smart, as are most retrievers. They get about 70lbs. And they looove to swim.

Just remember that first and foremost they were bred as a guard dog, and you pick up a Chessies food dish "with permission only" (they are posessive)
In reality they are great dogs but tend to be a one person dog.
