Muhammad was born at Mecca in 570 in a Quraish tribe that ruled over the city and the surrounding area. His father died on a trading trip at Yathrib just before Muhammad's birth and his mother was left to raise him. Mothers in Quraish tribes traditionally handed their infants over to a nurse from a Bedouin tribe believing that the air of the desert was healthier. Muhammad was given to Halima, who nursed him for 2 years before returning the boy to his mother. Muhammad's mother feared for his health in the air of Mecca and instructed the nurse to take him back to the desert for two more years. When Halima returned a second time she reported that Muhammad had been having fits and she feared that he may be demon possessed. She was once again persuaded to return Muhammad to the desert. However, after an increasing number of epileptic seizures, she returned him to his mother at the age of five. Shortly thereafter, while returning from a trip to Yathrib, Muhammad's mother died leaving him to the care of his grandfather.

Well, yes, I suppose these symptoms do resemble epileptic seizures, but they could be symptomatic of a number of things--even hypoglycemia.

Many of the Christian saints as well as ordinary religious practitioners also have reported physical manifestations of spiritual experience. Unfortunately, we tend to shy away from looking at spiritual experience and the many varieties and manifestations of it, despite consistent reports through history that some encounters with the divine impact the human body and its systems in a range of responses from the charismatic to the less obvious manifestations.

So, whatever was going on in this case we have no way of knowing...what is more important is that this individual was a prophet and holy person.

No serious historians are trying to claim any longer that Muhammad had epilepsy. This opinion has no medical evidence to support it, and results from serious distortions or exaggerations of the descriptions we have of Muhammad's experiences (like the description the questionner posted above).

If you choose not to believe that Muhammad received revelation, then you cannot deny that he had at least a deeply spiritual experience.

Muslims believe that the perfection of Qur'an speaks for itself, in that it cannot be the work of a man, let alone a crazy man.

There is a key difference. Epileptics do not typically come away from their experience with an intelligible piece of literature.

If I had a quarter for every time someone suggested that Mohammad had epilepsy I'd be rich. This isn't a new idea, people!

The same story goes around about Paul--who made up and preached Christianity.
