I own a cat and a dog - my cat, Minou, is a wonderful hunter and brings me his "prizes" with pride on a daily basis, up until now it wasn't a problem, I would praise him for his great hunting skills and then quietly and sneakily get rid of his "present", a pet should never be punished for a natural instinct.. anyways.. my young chihuahua, Taz, who is an extremely finicky eater, has decided to add mice to his menu *shudders*, usually I am fast enough to get to Minou's prizes before Taz .. but today Taz got one and would not give it up, instead he devoured it, every inch of it.. *ewwww*.. that happened several hours ago.. so far he seems fine.. is this normal for chihuahuas to like mouse meat????

Sure. He'll be fine, no doubt. But if you are concerned, bring him by the vet to check him for worms. Dogs, however small, are carnivores, too. It was nice of his kitty sibling to catch him a fresh dinner.

Such a small dog, it probably seemed like a roast to him. LOL! I understand your concern and distaste for his snack, mice seem so yucky and dirty, and probably are just as germy as we think they are, but dogs are pretty hardy, even small ones (mine like to snack on the litter box if I let them reach it--talk about YUCK!), so Taz should survive his rodent dining experience.

That's a cute story. Thanks for telling it. You made me smile. I could just see it all happening.

I've owned a few chihuahuas in my life and to be honest this is the first one I've ever heard of that would eat mice. I guess if he's alright and doesn't have any obvious ill effect it's going to be fine.

Dogs are scavengers and hunters in one fell swoop. I would take your dog to the vet, just incase of any bacteria, but in general dogs will eat everything. trying to train a cat is a feudal expense of time, because cats don't have the same "need to please" instinct. but you might want to teach your dog not to go after mice. simply show him a mouse and a toy at the same time. every time he goes after the mouse discipline him. and everytime he goes for the toy, praise him.

sure-he's mostly carnivore. try giving him raw chicken wings-necks, backs-no cooked bones, as they cannot digest these. i know its scary-but u can do a search on biologically correct food for your dog. (i feed my dog raw chicken all the time) if u knew what they put in commercial dog food you'd think the mouse was pretty good eatin' lol

His breed was created to kill rats, so yes, he is doing his natural job. Don't worry, but treat the dog & cat for worms monthly.

You just raised my opinions on chihuahuas.

He should be fine. Centuries ago that's what their diet was all about.

its normal for dogs to eat anything. i've had 4 dogs, and they've all ate some pretty bad things, but they all survived.
