First of all, I live with the FRUSTRATION factor of having to use tools designed for the RIGHT-Handed population, that the School Desks make us sit like contortionists (or ... like I did -- take two seats just to be able to write comfortably), having to use kitchen utensils that are NOT sharpened so that we can cut with any form of accuracy, and even such things as chain saws -- which takes some bit of ingenuity to even work with the pull start mechanism!
Then ... I don't know about how long lefties live -- but I'm now over a half-century old, and I've got quite a bit of life left in this body -- and for which I intend to go to my grave STILL kicking and screaming and moving around .....
As far as prisoners go -- prisoners are those who commit crimes -- I don't know many left-handed individuals in my life, but of all those I do know -- not one of my fellow lefties have ever been in prison -- so that is most likely an Urban Myth.
We are smarter (some think) because we are in our "Right" Brain!

I personally feel that left handed people have a special talents, for some reason. I have a relative, she's a hair stylist, left handed. I work for a doctor, also left handed. My daughter's father, basketball, of course, left handed. Just to name a few. This is not to say that left handed or right handed people are any more different from the other, but for some reason, left handed people are known for having some type of talent.

We die earlier because of the frustration of living in a right handed world. We are smarter because we are the only ones in our right mind.
I don't know about 70% of prisoners being left handed. If so it is because we are taking out revenge on the right handed world.

Wow, there are alot of us on this site! I have learned to do many things with my right hand, and some things with both hands. I have encountered many people whom I thought were very smart, talented, gifted in one way or another, and the majority are lefties. I read somewhere that the reason alot of lefties die sooner is that they have accidents due to the world being right-handed oriented. I don't know if that's true, but sometimes it seems that way!

in response to the answer at the top of the page, I am sooooo glad I am ambidextrious. They say left handers are more creative minded than right handed people. I am constantly surprised in alcohol/substance abuse recovery meetings that the percentage of people that are left handed is so much larger than the population at large. I would suppose that is because so much of the world is geared towards the right handed experience versus the left handed, and consequently there is a subtle message laid on left handed people that we arent quite up to snuff. But I don't think thats intentional at all. Its just our interpretation.

Hum, it used to be that we died 8 years earlier! We do have a number of inventors and artists who are in our number - so I would agree with the smarter part. As for the prisoners thing - NO WAY! Let's face it, we're too smart to be in prison!

I think they are smarter. Anytime I come across a really smart person, I check to see what hand they are writing with and it's usually the left.

If you're left-handed (congratulations, you're in good company), don't listen or pay attention to myths started by right handed people.
Back in the 50s, I had my fingers taped so that I would be forced to learn to write with my right hand. Today I write and draw with my right hand but I do many things with my left hand . I can throw with either hand. I fence with my left hand and shoot a bow with equal skills with either hand; as a gymnast I did all of my turns and twists like a left-handed person. I swim and do my turns like a left-handed person. But, I'm always right (humor). Check out these sites:

Just don't let anyone try to sell you a left handed pencil or a left handed cup or left handed glass of water! (Just kidding... I couldn't resist)

I'm a Lefty....here's a troubling statistic....left-handed people are 95% more likely to become Schizophrenic.
The other 70,000 people in my closet agree.

Does it really matter? How will you live your life? Will you live under the shadow of those that die in prison15 years sooner, but are smarter in prision than the other inmates?
Many are left-handed! It's not a disease.
