Proverbs like that are made to be pondered endlessly.
It's speaking about the underlying interconnectedness of things. That there is no beginning or end and thus everything is both given and received. Time and space go in a loop.
Or, it's speaking of the idea that existence is an illusion, and thus nothing is actually given or received. You have nothing, so you can give nothing.

That isn't Buddhist, probably Confucius or Lao Tsu. It means that anything we get ourselves is worthless, only gifts matter. The only things that mean anything are things you have given or things you have been given. In short: sentimental value is the only value. It is not a Koan, Koans are a question and have no answer.

It talks about knowledge... When you give your knowledge (Idea) to others.. it will become your idea.. and though every ppl in the world may have that but it will always remain yours.
You are thinking in materialistic way.. materialistic materials can be lost by giving to other.. but that is very insignificant thing of life.

I don't know what you are missing 'cause I don't understand your question! :(
I guess, we can only have things which are given to us and we can't give someone something we don't have ourselves...
Like, hmm..
I don't know if this is what this means...but I know of someone who I think likes Buddhism and has said that
We must love ourselves to love and recieve love from others. That we must have love to give love? Not sure if I agree with it or not...but I think it might have something to do with the same teachings which is why I mentioned it.
Now 'my' question is, does this phrase make sense:
"Like is sweet, but not it seems for Budda. there's a shot-gun in his hand." from a song

Everything is and is not all at once man. Whet you have there is called a koan. They are seeming paradoxes, yet at the smae time they are not. Essentially it is saying you have everything and dont have anything all at once. Sit with is some more, you will understand.

If you take something it is stolen and does not really belong to you so you cannot give something that was not your to give. You may possess something that belongs to someone else.

Dear HellWolf:
Buddha speaks of one of the Principles of Life or God's Laws - not the Laws of Mankind. Let's allow Jesus to describe it to you, below. First, this is how it basically works:
In the physical world - we operate primarily from the human "ego" mind. When you study and learn of spirituality you endeavor to learn of your true Self - that thing that God Created Like Himself and Of Himself - the spirit-mind or One Mind.
In the physical you are operating more from your human mind or "intellect" than from your natural state of spirit - Created in Eternity.
Now for what Jesus teaches: "To the "ego" [ intellect ] to give anything away implies you will have to do without it. [Normally,]. . . we associate giving with sacrifice; you give only because you believe that you are somehow getting something better, and can therefore do without the thing you give. GIVING TO GET is an inescapable law of the ego, which always evaluates itself in relation to other egos. It is therefore continually preoccupied with the belief in scarcity." You can only possess so much due to the "getting" of other egos. Now to go on in my own words, but still spoken closely to the words Jesus continued to say:
In the realm of our Reality of spirit-mind, nothing is physical. There is only Mind and Thought. The Father is Mind and Thought. Therefore, you own NOTHING but ideas or thoughts. To hold an idea or thought to yourself brings you no conviction of your idea or thought being correct or true. But in the world of spirit - your natural State of Being - you are in a normal natural process of giving your thoughts and ideas away - through the One Mind - to the entire Sonship - your brothers. You are giving away the only thing that you possess (except for your Father, of course!). When thought or ideas are given away you receive back a response. If the idea or thought was Truth and Correct, the response will be RECOGNITION from the receiver and their identification with YOU, the thinker and sender. When two or more believe the SAME, the power of thought is increased and you also are convinced about the validity and strength of your idea or thought. So you have GAINED. You shared, but in the sharing did not lose anything ; you shared and were filled with more of what you possessed (your now expanded thought or idea!).
You cannot offer out love unless you possess love inside yourself. When you give it away, you receive back MORE. So you are always in a STATE OF GIVING AWAY THAT WHICH YOU OWN AND RECEIVING BACK MORE OF IT. If you do NOT give it away it will WITHER INSIDE OF YOU and you no longer have it to possess - for not giving it away keeps you, yourself, un-convinced of what you Thought - which is your possession. In this physical world we Copyright and patent our thoughts ! Don't we? We hold them to ourself. Our possession.
In other words, we give away or share what is inside our minds, or Being,(what we possess) to INCREASE its effects within ourself. To keep for yourself - is to wither it. This sounds like it may have come from Confuscious?
The human mind works in opposite: To give away is to lose your possession of it. Even to share is to lose part of the ownership. So the physical world works in opposite ways compared to the World of our Heritage - "The Kingdom," the "Sonship," where all is spirit and - thoughts or ideas.
All great teachers, Socrates, Plato, Ismael for Islam, Confuscious, Buddha and Jesus learned everything from the Holy Spirit. In different ways they express the same eternal truths for us to learn: We can only give away that which we first possess and can only possess that which we have given.
Love, Lana
