I got out of the Air Force in 2004. Your chances now of being deployed in the Air Force is 99.9%. There is no way you can be in the military anymore without deploying unless you have a serious medical condition, or if your brother was killed in Iraq like my husband's brother was and now he is a sole survivor.
In the Air Force you deploy to do your specific job, but they might make you do security forces detail.
Sorry Mom the military is not what it use to be.

Not ALL jobs are 9-5. Chances of being deployed straight out of school (in today's time) 70%. middle east 40%. I'm not sure what an engineering apprentice does but if it has to do with construction add 20% to both answers. Combat, probably not, combat area, maybe. I wouldn't worry too much though. We have allot of good people that look out for each other.

The AF is not 9-5 for instance I work 12 hour shifts 4 on 3 off.
As far as deploying you will usually get deployed in your job. We are on AEF cycles so the routine is usually 15 months home 4 gone. This will most likely be getting bumped up to 6 months soon.
There are diffrent situations though. Some people in the AF are going over for a year running convoys with the Army. The Army is short on people so they are calling on the AF to fill the holes. It doesnt matter your job either. I know a dental assistant that is running convoys right now.
Most likely he will not deploy with in the first year into the AF. He will have to come into the operational AF and then he will be given his CDC (Career Development Course) in order to recieve his 5-level. After that he is fair game. There is also the chance that he is awaiting a security clearence so they will send him over there in order to perform escort duties.
In the mililtary nothing is certain. You have to be on your toes at all times. I have been in for almost 5 years and did a 4 month tour in the dirt and a year in Korea. I am about to return back to the dirt to do another tour. Dont worry if your son does go over there he will enjoy himself and will feel that he has done his part.
Good luck to him.

9 to 5 huh... Chances are pretty good that your child will be deployed to the middle east. As for doing the job trained for, maybe, maybe not. There's a good chance of going as an escort. The escorts follow around the TCNs (Third Country Nationals ie. the cooks, the bathroom cleaners, etc...) to make sure they aren't going where they don't belong. The other form of escort in the AOR are the airmen who sit in a vehicle watching over the comings and goings of the TCNs. Pretty boring work especially around 12 a.m. - 5 a.m. The truth of the matter is there isn't much room for a 3-level (apprentice) to do OJT while in a war zone. If he/she goes to Qatar or Kuwait, who knows what will keep him/her gainfully employed for the interim, probably working with services.

if you are an engineer then you will be deployed to do your job. normally i would say the chances of going overseas were slim unless you chose a year tour in korea to get base preference(you choose what base you go to)but, lately everyone is going to either iraq or kuwait. but, the bases over there are safer than anywhere in the us. your typical tdy (your 4 month deployment) rotation is every 18 months, but it is not a strict schedule. my husband was deployed in may for the first time since he joined 3 years ago, and another friend if mine hasn't been deployed until this rotation in over 5. i would say that right now chances are high to be deployed but, it isn't tramatic. they have phones to call home, the internet and steak and seafood every friday!! my husband calls almost everyday and we talk for an hour.

The Air Force is not a 9 to 5 job for most...don't know where you got that information...as for deploying....Ummm hello..there is a war going on...so your chances are pretty darn good....but...as most have said it does depend on your career field and the Unit that you are assigned to. If your Squadron goes, you'll more than likely go to..even if in an adminstrative capacity...

expect that your child WILL be deployed. Whether that's to the litter box, Korea, Somalia or elsewhere remains to be seen.
Many people do get sent out in an Individual Augmentee slot.. which means they will be deployed to do something possibly not in their field.
the military is NOT a 9-5 job, not even the Air Force.

9-5 job more like 12 hours days/nights. chances of being deployed about 100%. he/she will be deployed to the middle east to an airbase, there are some in iraq, afghanistan, and kuwait. no escaping it if he/she's unit is going.

Concerned mom;
I cannot accurately answer your question, but I do wish to make this comment to you.
If your Son or Daughter is currently a member of the Air Force please say "Thank You" to them for me for their sacrifice and service to our nation. It is comforting to know that there are brave young Americans such as your Son or Daughter who are willing to keep watch over the country. You should be VERY proud of them and the decision they made to serve. The places they go, the things they do, and the people they meet while in the military will help to make them outstanding and successful citizens.
If your Son or Daughter is only considering an Air Force career, my comment will apply to them once they join.
