I just got a 6mth old cat. Everytime she goes to the bathroom and is finished doing her business she paws outside the box to cover her business even though theres no litter outside the box. In the end the poop ends up being uncovered. What are some things i can do to get her to cover her business in the litter and stop pawing at nothing outside the box?

It is the nature of the cat. I have a cat that is over 10 yrs old and she has always done it. You might try using a litter box with a lid on it if the cat will accept it. It will keep more litter in the box than uncovered ones do.

Have had many a cat do this and there is little you can do. One thing we tried, however, was to purchase one of those litter boxes with a cover and a small opening for the cat to climb into. It seemed to work for a while, then the cat would sit half way out of the box and do the same thing.

If you have a basement, I would suggest putting the litter box there to eliminate having to smell the feces.

you can put her in the litter box and move her paws manually so you are making her paw inside the box. once she gets the hang of it, she should start covering up the poop. thats how i trained my cat.

If the cat box has too much waste in it she wont want to stand in it but out of necessity she'll use it for the time to go. If that's not the problem perhaps the box isn't big enough for her. Cats in general are pretty clean animals.

I agree with Tina: Use a covered box. However, if your cat won't use a covered box, (and some won't) buy one with high sides.

Also, if you have newspaper under your box, cats will scratch that instead of covering anything up with litter.

I have one cat that never covers, and one cat that covers obsessively. He will come along and cover up the other one's business, LOL.

Really, not a lot you can do except adapt.

our cat did that as a kitten. it is thinking that the area that it is toileting is larger than what it is. either place more litter in it or build up the side of the tray a couple of centimeters
