of coarse they can. They just have to have a set of tags for themselves. You can get as many sets as you like. I have had about 2 dozen over the years.

Why would you give your dog tags to someone else? They are supposed to be worn everyday, all day when in uniform. So if you gave them away...what would you do at the morning inspection? Oh well sorry SSgt. my girlfriend is wearing them. That crap won't fly. Give your ring or something. Not to mention dog tags are also a way of identifying you and your medical needs. Bad bad idea. And beware of girls that have a ton of tags...they get around. Some times girls that sleep with military members want their tags, like a look who I did reminder.
If you have to give your tags away get another set made. So you always have what you need. You should have one around your neck and one laced into your bootlaces.

The idea behind NAME TAGS as they would say to me we are not dogs is to be able to identify you if you are dead. You are out of uniform if you do not have both. See if you can get copies made. I changed my religion while in the service so I got a new name tag made. Give her the old ones.
One is kept on the body the other is sent home or for identification or carried home if you have to leave the body behind in case it is recovered later on. You are suppose to always be wearing two for that reason.

NO! Your dog tags serve a purpose they are not BLING. If you are killed in combat by an IED your dog tags might be the only thing to identify which dog died. Buy your girl friend a nice Wal-Mart ring and ask her to take it off when she is in bed with one of your friends while you are dodging bullets.

Technically no. The identification tags are the property of the US. As a practical matter, many "lost" dog tags end up in girlfriends' hands.

He should not do it unless he has another set. Dog tags have a purpose in the military. It's not a piece of jewelry.

If I am not mistaken those are actually property of the US Government and should not really ever be given away. I know that is how it was for a very long time but that may have changed in recent years.

I guess you can get another set made, but I never even thought of giving my dog tags to someone. They have our SSN on them, so you had better trust the person you are handing them over to.

You can go to any army/navy surplus, or the military exchange and have another set made. I agree with the first answer. Even though I was in aviation, I managed to need a new set every year because I kept losing mine, and my g/f (now wife) had a set made for her to keep as well.

Pretty hard to identify the body of a dead soldier if the girlfriend is wearing the dog tags on another continent.
