I converted an 86 mustang from a 2.3 four cylinder to a 5.0 V8 the v8 is carborated and so was the 2.3 i took out of it but the computer or the (ecm) is still for the 4 cylinder. I know for sure that the 4 cylinder computer is the eec-iv setup cause i had the computer out to check and the distributor is for a v8 also a eec-iv setup. Ive replaced the solenoid,starter,the whole distributor,the ignition switch,the battery and i put in a new ignition coil and it still does the same thing. The one thing I noticed is that it backfires most of the time when its real hot outside and especially hot inside of the car.Could it be the computer is no good? Any ideas what it may be or something I can try?

did you get the ecu reprogrammed for the 5.0 all ecu"s get programmed for there specific use. carboration is for dinosaurs. switch to a ford racing efi harness and bbk injection kit. carberation cant touch the ease of use nor the ability to make horse power

Are you running to rich? Run it and shut it off then check you're spark plugs. See if they smell like gas. Plobley dumb but you didn't say if you changed the spark plugs they could be fouled. Check your timing to see if its too advanced and check your timing chain for slopyness. Bad valve guides or just bad valves. If you're worried about the computer and the distributer which I dont think that would cause this problem. Go onto Ebay and buy one of those cheap HEI distributors. Works great and you only need one wire "HOTWIRE" to work.

I would check the timing, I would also check the valves. does it backfire out the exhaust or the carb. if the carb than I would look at early timing if exhaust it could be a valve not closing and has been stretched.. Probably not the computer as it will just flat fail if it gets too hot. I would point to the valve train hanging ot the valves are shot

carbs can be tricky. the setup may need to be changed slightly to compensate for the air conditions. call around to some performance shops in your area for some specific help.
