I am a currently college student in New York. I want to help out in Louisiana during my Winter Recess. The problem is that there are hardly any programs that talk about housing and staying short term.
I really want to help out and any information would be greatly appreciated.

My niece who is l7 went to Gulfport and helped the Habitat for Humanity program started by Pres. Carter.......she really enjoyed building a new home for these victims of Hurricane Katrina.

Try calling the churches!!

I am from Louisiana. If you want to help, just go to the city of New Orleans and they will put you to work the minute you get there. I am sure the networking is easier there....they can put you in touch with the right people to help you help the city.
Where there is a will, there is a way!!!

Check with your local United Way or Red Cross. There might be some displaced families in your area. Rebuilding a life takes a while. You could be of real assistance.

Well they still need a lot of help and I was looking into going there last spring break but it didn't pan out. But here is a good reference page that should help get you started. I wish you all the luck that you make it down there.
