I guess it all depends on what line of work you are both in. If you work in an "Office" environment perhaps something to make his work day a little more pleasant. A popular office gift lately has been those small desktop water fountains. They come in all sizes and are great for putting the relaxing sound of falling water right on his desk. A nice high-end desk set is not a bad idea either. They make them in price ranges from about thirty bucks all the way up into the hundreds of dollars. If he has his own office maybe you can get him some live plants or some art for his walls. The plants give the room a more personal feel while also cleaning the sometimes stale air in office buildings.
If he is into fine wines, you can never go wrong with a nice bottle from a vintage year, or if he is a beer drinker you can get him a nice selection of local micro-brews.

Maybe you could take him to dinner. Or have him over to your place for a home made meal (if he has a significant other invite him to)
Or write him a letter telling him how much you appreciate him and his help. A personal note will touch his heart and he'll remember you always.
