Should I get Empire Blue Cross or HMO? Which one is better and why?

The answerer above is right about the HMO. I’ve included several links below that might be of use to you. First, the Blue Cross plan is probably a preferred provider organization (PPO). They are more expensive than HMO plans but they allow you greater freedom in choosing your doctor and in getting approval for medical procedures. However, PPO plans generally do not have as much preventive care (regular check-ups, physicals, etc.) as HMO plans do. Both models work for people and Blue Cross plans are frequently among the highest rated plans in the country.

On to the links. First, I’ve linked to a Consumer Reports article which describes a survey of thousands of people enrolled in HMO and PPO plans. I’ve also included links to a couple of articles about how to choose a health plan which I think are easy to follow and make a lot of practical sense. The next link is to U.S. News and Work Reports Best Plans issue, which contains profiles of high-quality plans across the country. The final link is to state insurance offices. Many insurance offices rate health plans each year and some, such as Florida and New Jersey, issue a Best Plans guide specifically for HMOs.

If you would like to check out local plans quickly, try MostChoice.com. There’s no fee or obligation involved, and you can also talk about what you’re interested in with state-licensed health insurance agents – again without any pressure to buy anything from anyone. Just fill out a short form, review online health plan quotes and information, and local agents will contact you shortly thereafter.

Go with empire, you have a broader choice of doctors and can still use the hmo doctors too. You're choices are more curtailed with the hmo. Good Luck

Empire Blue Coss is better because with HMO's you have to go through a lot more hassle when seeing doctors, such as getting referrals and what not.

You didn't say which HMO, we can't tell you which is better unless we know.

I would suggest that you shop around. Take advantage of the internet. Go to http://www.2insure4less.com/?s=blog and fill out an insurance quote request form. You would get many different quotes from different companies.
