The only stupid question is the one that is not asked. You're not asking the difference between a left handed fighter and a right handed fighter and how they throw their punches, you're asking what's the difference between a cross and a hook, correct? The difference is the bend in the elbow. When you throw a cross your fist shoots from your shoulder across your body, locking your elbow as you strike your opponent. When you throw a hook it's the angel of your body shifting your weight to your front foot throwing your fist out but bringing it back as if you were going to hit your opposite shoulder.
As for the nonsense that hooks are thrown only at the head, Julio Cesar Chavez would beg to differ, a good left hook to the body can and has paralyzed many opponents, just ask De La Hoya after his fight with Hopkins. This punch is a lot like an uppercut but instead of shooting up the middle, you use the same angle but you're looping behind your opponents right elbow.
The Great Angelo Dundee said "There's only the left hook, there's no such thing as a right hook, it's the angel of the body, Southpaws throw a roundhouse." Who are we to argue with Angie? Thanks for the great question Ray.............Read your 360 page. You ever had a slice from Lorenzos on South Street, in Philly?

Can't add anything to Santana's excellent explanation, but I will dispute that there isn't such a thing as a stupid question--I see plenty of 'em here. Try telling me there's no such thing as a stupid question when I'm trying to answer the latest "Would Tyson beat up a pack of hungry grizzly bears?" query. ; )

Your question, however, was a very good one. Both the hook and the cross are defined by CompuBox as "power punches". The hook is more open and "looping" while the cross actually "crosses" over the leading hand (hence the name) usually a jab to set up the cross.

Assuming a boxer is right handed. You stand with your left hand as your lead hand. A cross is a punch thrown with your rear hand that crosses your body to strike your opponent. A hook is a semi circular punch thrown with your lead hand usually at your opponents head.
