never heard of peter ascending into heaven.
linus came after peter.
then onthe vicar of Christ:
A title of the pope implying his supreme and universal primacy, both of honour and of jurisdiction, over the Church of Christ. It is founded on the words of the Divine Shepherd to St. Peter: "Feed my lambs. . . . Feed my sheep" (John 21:16-17), by which He constituted the Prince of the Apostles guardian of His entire flock in His own place, thus making him His Vicar and fulfilling the promise made in Matthew 16:18-19.

As to Peter being the leader of the Christians after Jesus ascended to heaven, no he was part of a group. He was a leader in that he took the lead in following up on Jesus' instructions. God was always the leader, even Jesus followed his God.
Also, how could Peter be the first pope when he was married?
Matthew 8:14; Mark 1:30; Luke 4:38 (Peter's name was Simon Peter)
(popes don't get married right?)

Yes, the pope is the vicar of Christ. Our first pope was Peter. This is a documented fact that is part of our Christian history. Peter was given special authority by Jesus to govern and lead the Church, and this authority was handed down from one pope to the next for 2,000 years and now rests with Pope Benedict XVI.

Upon Paul's return to Jerusalem, there were three Apostles that "seemed to be the pillars" of the church.
James, Cephas (Peter) and John.
Peter was one of three leaders in the 1st century church.
Peter received the keys to the Kingdom of God from Jesus, not the keys to the church.
