Can having pet turtles cause harm to persons with respiratory problems?

Reptiles, including pet turtles may carry the bacteria Salmonella so wash your hands after handling these pets. Otherwise, they cannot really cause respiratory problems.
I have asthma and have had Drew, a Southeast Asian water turtle for 15 years. :)

Actually I've heard that they can carry a lot of diseases. I was told by a pet store that it's illegal to sell them her in Indiana for that very reason.
