you will see them at first sitting close together and the male will be feeding the female. Then, there is a lot of noise as they flutter around the cage. When they connect my female is usually at bottom of cage with him next to her! I dont think you could miss it if you are within hearing range. Only lasts for a few seconds.

Questions: Signs of mating for parakeets

Posted by: mybluebirds on Monday, March 13, 2006 - 12:10 AM

How can you tell if your parakeets are mating?

These are my first 2 birds and they stay together 99% of the time. Today, the one parakeet was nipping on the others neck & they were chirping. One time they kept touching their beaks together like they were kissing. Are these mating signs? They seem like happy birds and play with their toys & swing & chirp a lot.

Have you suddenly gotten tiny, brown paper-wrapped packages from Frederick's of Hollywood? Have they taken up smoking? Do you hear them giggling but they stop when you walk in the room? Seriously though, you'll know. Males and females and even same-sex parakeets demonstrate signs of affection like grooming each other and nibbling on their cage mates but mating is blatantly obvious. The male will stand on the females back in a way that looks horribly uncomfortable for her and it will be over before you can say anything about it.

If your parakeets are mating - the female will lay eggs. Usually one every other day or so.
She may rip up papers in the bottom of the cage or go into her nest (if you have provided one).
Make sure you have a pair. Sometimes it's hard to tell. What kind are they????

It's kind of obvious, you've probably seen wild birds like sparrows mate, it's the same. Don't be fooled if eggs are being laid. Just like hens, birds lay eggs, but they have to be fertilized by a male in order to hatch.

There will be a candlelight from the cage and you can here Barry White playing. Not to mention the sign on the cage that says, "If this cage is rockin, don't bother knockin."

Well when a Man-bird meets a she-bird, the man-bird lets out a mating call and the she-bird lets the man-bird on-top.

um.......... if they're attached together, then that would probably be a good sign of some mating going on.
