You need to think outside the box, and multilaterally.
The stamp is not just there to send letters.....but it ensures the letters arrive in their destination.
The stamp is not just to cover costs......but it employs thousands of workers that support their families.
The stamp is not just a pretty picture for stamp collectors....... it also promotes and advertises the country it comes from..... the personalities, the building structures, the indigenous plants, flowers, wildlifes....scenic natural wonders, unique events & happenings...etc.
The stamp is not just a piece of sticky paper....... it holds the hands of people all over the world and put those hands into one another......so that friendship is formed, enhanced..... and sustained in a world that has lost much love, sincerity and warmth.
a stamp on a letter tells you that someone you know bothers to take time out to write you something nice...... oftne starting with "Dear".....and signing off with "Love".
Our world has lost itself in its pursuit of materialism and money..... few people take time out......bcoz 'Time is Money!'
Write me a letter... dear.
If you do......I will send you my love.... and post it with a 'simple' stamp...... my dear!

Sorry m'lady, it is to cover the cost of mailing your letter. The P.O. is a separate government entity, financed by the postal sales. You can even print your own stamps if you wish now, and pay for the price of mailing (the actual cost). America is really cheap on postage, locally and even internationally.
Some people like variety. Colorful stamps get your attention.

They have to raise postage on individuals like you and me, so they can keep it super-cheap for the junk-mailers to keep our mailboxes stuffed with garbage, so they can sponser Tour de France cycling teams, and so they can maintain a futile effort to compete with e-mail and the internet. Stamps for the collectors generally make money for the post office, which should be clear to you if you consider that those folks are paying for postal service that they never actually use when they buy stamps and keep them.

Because it costs more each year to deliver the mail. It has nothing to do with what the stamps look like. If anything, the stamp collectors are subsidizing mail delivery, because they buy postage and then never use it... meaning they pay for services unrendered. It's practically pure profit for USPS.

You just want to mail a letter right, okay
how does it get where it is going?
I mean, how does it get from Point A to Point B. either by truck or plane,
How does it get delivered? By a mail person, wages and so forth?

Every time gas goes up a penny, it costs the Post Office a million dollars a year.
Have you seen the price of gas lately?
