Hey everyone thanks for taking the time to read my question. I am thinking of buying a Cockatiel Bird when I move. I have had some birds in the past,but they were mean and bit. I want a bird that LOVES,LOVES, LOVES humans that I can hold all the time and does not bite. Can any one give me advice on a bird? I have heard that Cockatiel birds love human attention and are pretty nice.

You will want a cockatiel that has been hand raised. That makes a HUGE difference.
I have 2 cockatiels. The first one I got I paid about $100 (he's pied) and he was hand raised. Sweet sweet boy, he loved to sit on my shoulder and nibble on the wing of my glasses. He would ride around on my shoulder and was just a neat boy. We had him for about 3 years and I decided he needed a mate. I bought a female for him but she had not been hand raised. She is not a mean bird but she doesn't like to be touched at all. She will watch me and raise her foot at me, almost like she would like to get on my finger but if I offer her my hand she moves away very quickly.
Now that the two of them are together he doesn't like to be handled. I've had him about 8 years and her for about 6 years.
Remember that if you have a ceiling fan or wood stove you need to make sure you take certain precautions before letting your birds out.

I have 2 cockatiels and 2 love birds. When buying one, make sure it is hand fed as a baby, then it will be use to the human touch. Be prepared to clean up a lot of mess. Birds are very messy and love to throw seed around.

i have had several cockatiels. They are very funny, loving,and entertaining pets. But just like any other animal if you don't take it out of the cage it will become anti social. It is best to buy a baby that has been hand fed. They are used to human touch and will make the best pet. I have had good luck with males that talk. I have had some luck with females. But the ones that did talk did not have the vocabulary the males did. They were just as loving.

I have a Cockatiel, and he started out real sweet and nice like you would like for your bird, but for some reason when he was a couple years old his temperament changed. I mean, he lets me hold him.. but only for so long, then he decides that he wants to bite my thumb off.
The Cockatiels that anyone else that I know who has/had one have also had kind of prissy temperaments too - one wouldn't let a human hand go NEAR it or the cage without hissing.
I hear lovebirds are really sweet - maybe you should do some research on those?

All cockatiels have different temperaments, but the hand-fed babies are more likely to bond with a human. Some are high-strung, some easy going, just depends on the bird, they all have personalities. I have a wonderful lutino (yellow) cockatiel, and she loves to be out and on my (or my husband's) shoulders, but she does not like to be touched. (Except the occasional head-scratching). She tends to be a little high-maintenance, but she is really a sweetie and we love her. Make sure you give your new bird a lot of attention so it learns to trust you and love you.

yes, i heard that they are pretty nice and they just love to be held. Also, i heard and i know that parrots are great pets. they are one of the birds that you can spend time with and feel like you doing something important (and have fun) when teaching them to talk. parrots are also great birds to show off. if you have your heart set on getting a bird have fun selecting your bird and good luck. but if you are willing to get a different pet, may a recommend a dog. they love attention, and great to hold and play with small dog will let you hold them all the time, also are great around people.

You need to get a hand fed baby from the breeder or bird shop in order to get one that will both bond to you AND can be handled easily. Be aware that cockatiels (like most birds in the parrot family) can be aggressive around their cage even to the person they have bonded most with. If this happens you can train the bird to first step onto a wood spoon handle or stick and then remove it from the cage and have it step up onto your finger.

I have a cockatiel, and he loves people. The trick is to get them when they are young, and handle them often. Clipping their wings also keeps them from being overly aggressive. If you are buying from a breeder, be sure he has hand fed them. Good luck!

My mom has had one for a few years now. She carries him around alot, and talks to him all of the time, and yes he actually talks back, as opposed to simply chirping and singing all day long. He's shy around he people doesn't know though. Just like any other pet, take care of it, pay attention to it, and you'll have a good friend.

Cockatiels are nice. So are African Grey Parrots. Sun Conures and Cockatoos scream at dusk and dawn (and whenever else they feel like it). You can't train them out of it, it is instinctive behavior.
Whatever you decide on, spend a little more for a hand fed one. They are more used to people.
