My male chihuahua kept on whimpering while the female one was giving birth yesterday. This morning, all the giving birth process is done, we already have the puppies but the male chihuahua keeps on whimpering and crying still. It is as if he wants to go near the newborns (which we are not allowing).

Why is that so?

No, male dogs generally don't have paternal instincts. Most female dogs will fight any male dog that goes near her puppies. He might just be whimpering because he feels that something is different, or because he knows that there are new smells (the new puppies) in the house. My dog will whimper and whine when she sees another dog, but she definitely doesn't want to be friends!

We are really surprised by the comments that male dogs have not parental instinct. Perhaps they don t but if that is the case our Polish Lowland Sheepdog has consciously decided to be a caring father. For the first 2 weeks after the pups were born he kept his distance and bothered neither the mother nor the pups. Then slowly approached them and at time the mother would either place herself between him and his pup or she would snap at him. But that passed and he became a caring father. He would run to the pups if they made an alarming sound, he began to play with them and then he started grooming them just as the mother did. At times he would lie there facing them, observing. When the pups rough house he barks until they stop. When we took the first puppy outside he even positioned himself above the pup and stayed that way as she walked. His genuine love and care for his offspring is truly heartwarming. Is this really such an anomoly?

Yes WARNING!!! your male will have no paternal instinct whatsoever, but it will have an instinct to get to those puppies by the sounds.

To him they sound like prey. An injured animal mewling. Don't leave the male alone for a second if he can even slightly gain access or you may end up with a litter of dead puppies.

He probably misses his female friend. You are doing the right thing by keeping them apart. Male dogs have been known to kill puppies in order to make the female come in to heat again.

It might be more because he is separated from his female friend, and doens't like it.
