Easy question right... of course religion would strenghten a marriage, while godless people would find it harder to stay loyal and true to each other.
What about the murder rate? Would a predominately Christian country have a lower murder rate then a less religious country?

The answer seems obvious again - Christians value life...

Then how can you explain this article???

"What is the point?"
- The point is I hope that I can pull back the curtain for people and reveal the Wizard of Oz.

"If they did that then they were not true Christians..."
- Apparently you have not read the Old Testament. Try reading Exodus Ch. 21, or Leviticus Ch. 20.

"If they were true Atheists, they wouldn't marry..."
- what, we godless heathens don't have as much right as anyone else to choose someone as a life partner? Should we stop dating also???

To those who answered "no difference", or "Christians" - did you not read the article. A study was already conducted to answer that question. I assume you can read since you are here.

In case anyone didn't already guess - I am an atheist, and a true believer in people, not idolatry.

I agree with the guy at the bottom - statistics can be skewed depending on what they used at their standard of measure. However, the study I refer to in the article was made by Christians in the hopes of showing that religion creates better marriages. So, how do you know they didn't skew it positive toward Christians?

I'd say good luck figuring the truth out..And if you believe it's all the Atheists then you need help and so does the Christian community who thinks this way... Stop blaming everyone else... It's not just one group that has problems it's all of them...Including Christians... My family is Atheist and my parents have been happily married for over 40 years... I'm Atheist and I've been happily married for 9... No one in my family has ever committed any crimes so what does that mean...? I know Christians who are not faithful to their spouses... So Stop pointing fingers if that's what you're trying to do.... I love all religions so don't think I'm bashing you in any way...And If I've misunderstood the question then please accept my apology...

Atheists value life just as much as Christians do.

Unlike some Christians they also value honesty.

The murder rate is far higher in Christian countries like the USA than in countries with much higher percentages of atheists.

Loyalty in marriage has nothing to do with religions. You are living in a fantasy that religions make you more loyal. It is simply not true.

Creation theory is nothing but a crackpot fundamentalist idea that assumes you can take the Bible literally and replace science with religion.

You are a very ignorant person and have been brainwashed by fundamentalists.

This notion that Christians value life more than athiests, or that Christians are somehow more loyal and less likely to divorce than athiests is very insulting, and suggests that acting in a moral manner is dependent upon belief in a God. That's nonsense. Compatibility is far more important to marriage than religion, and if two people aren't compatible, it doesn't matter how Christian they are or how much they love God. It isn't going to work. As for murder, athiests certainly don't have the patent on that either. There are plenty of so-called Christians sitting in our prisons for killing other people.

That's the problem with generalizations.

Why does it matter? Divorce rates really don't indicate a lack of success of marriage.

Religion tends to treat women as property, especially Christianity and Islam. As such, women have not been free to divorce when in a bad marriage. Or if they were allowed to divorce, they were ostracized from society. I'm sure if you looked at divorce rates from that time, I'm sure you would find them extremely low.

Today, women have a lot more freedoms. They are allowed to divorce more. They are more likely to get out of abusive relationships. And people these days are much more able to define what marriage means to them. It is not always a lifetime commitment anymore.

Personally, I'm the type who would like to settle down eventually. I know other people who prefer short-term relationships. Sometimes, they later decide to settle down. Still, the mix of people and values in society cause the divorce rate to be higher than it would be otherwise under a theocracy.

That's not wuch a bad thing. Sometimes being willing to admit when a relationship is not working is more "true to each other" than hanging onto a bad relationship.

As for the murder rate, I would think that atheists are less likely to murder. They are not as morally lazy as religious people who get theirs spoon-fed to them by their leaders.

The statistics show that amongst religious people, the divorce rate is 27%, 24% for born again Christians, and amongsts the atheists it is only 21%. The prison population of atheists is only 0.02%.

Before you judge these statistics, I want to remind you that these are not TRUE Atheists, so in reality, us folks that disbelieve in a creator actually have a 0% divorce rate and 0% crime rate.

Just because I say I'm a Christian doesn't prove anything, what if I said I was president of the usa that doesn't mean it's true, statistics can be twisted, ie a mayor runs for re-election and says i've stopped murder by 5%, but his opponent says murders by stabbing have gone up 20% who is more right, see you are just straying statistics in my county's school handbook and regulations it says it know religion has helped lower gang members, murders, crime, ect see your smart aren't you

Well, first, those statements are making some sad assumptions (as the article points out).

Second, at least atheists do not live their lives in a one way relationship with a being who never compromises or shows his love.

The article does point out some good correlations.

What about the murder rate among all these christians in the USA. It seems they can't wait to kill each other. Perhaps if they didn't love their imaginary god so much and try loving each other the murder rate in America would go down.
